FANTASIES, FABLES AND TRADITIONS

Doctrine Danger

16For we have not followed cunningly devised fables, (2Pet 1:)


We all know and accept that there are many False Doctrines in the World. The Bible often speaks on this very thing - especially in regard to these last days.

But of course we all know for certain those "False Doctrines" are all the other doctrines, not those we or our church hold to.

Wouldn't it be nice if we could only get those other churches to "see the Light" and agree with us on the True Doctrine?


We also know the "World" is having its own difficulty trying to stay away from False Doctrine, what with such doctrines as Evolution and the what-not. And speaking of Evolution where it is believed that things start from nothing and get better and better - have you ever considered history, and especially Family history? I think of such notable families as that of King David who created a mighty nation, and his son Solomon who had the opportunity to build on what had already gone before (which is a great advantage, that is, to be an heir of a great man); but with all his special wisdom, he sinned greatly and began the spiraling destruction of that nation, which his heirs completed. And then there's Alexander the Great, though not followed by his sons (who were not even sufficiently qualified to be in the running for ruling of his empire), who's mightiest generals began its decline. And there are the Caesars, and the list goes on.

Wouldn't you think if the theory of Evolution was viable that at least it would be so in a gene pool?


Or in the church?


But, if that were true, then after two thousand years, the church that God created must be far better than that seedling Church that Jesus and the Apostles worked so hard to create, wouldn't you think?


But all this aside, what difference does it make if people believe an "error" rather than the Truth? In the World it obviously makes no difference whatever. The consequences of believing one lie is the same as it is with following another, at least as far as Eternity is concerned.

But what about in the church?

Is following the doctrines and traditions of one particular church going to get me any farther into Heaven, or in better graces with God than another?

Obviously by some accounts, it does.

But we all know, in reality, it is not the church you attend that is going to make the difference. (I know there are those exceptional churches who believe that just by being a member of their church, and only their church, you will make it to Heaven.) It is what you believe in your own heart, as an individual that is going to make the difference, regardless of what your church believes doctrinally wise.


So, again, what difference does it make what you or your church believes, it's all going to come out the same in the end, isn't it? I mean, if you believe with all your heart that Jesus is your Savior, isn't that all that is necessary? Of course some churches add rituals and other necessary works to the formula, but if you belong to such a church, and perform properly those works as well, then aren't you assured of Heaven?


Well, such is the consensus of most of the churches. That is, if you follow their rules, whatever they might be (which includes those churches who's rules state that following any rules is breaking their rules, therefore causing that rule-breaker to be in danger of hellfire) then you are assured of Heaven and Eternal bliss.


But let me add one more ingredient to the mix, an important ingredient that is often forgotten, or minimized at best in sermons and writings. That important ingredient is the Holy Spirit.

Now, I know most of you have been fully instructed and therefore believe that you have the Holy Spirit dwelling in you, and that you received Him, fully and forever the very moment you said "I Do" at your baptism or whatever. If you are content and convinced of your total and complete Salvation based on the doctrines of your church, then you will probably feel that what I am about to say already applies to you as well.


Jesus said He would send the Holy Spirit to comfort us (those who, like His Apostles have submitted themselves to the Lord) and to lead us in understanding the Scriptures (John 14:15-31). This means that each of us who has the Holy Spirit is not only comforted, but is able to understand the Scriptures as well. Does this make sense? That is, if the Holy Spirit is the means by which we are able to understand the Scriptures, than by understanding the Scriptures, we may be confident that we do, in fact, have the Holy Spirit?

Then, if this is true, why is it that so many "Spirit Filled and led" Christians and preachers are understanding the Scriptures so differently?


Understanding the Scriptures is evidence that the Holy Spirit indwells you. Am I right? Even if you rarely open your Bible, except at church (to impress your friends that you know how to open your Bible and find a page), you are still confident that you have the Holy Spirit. And your Pastor will reassure you of this fact if you are ever in doubt. Am I right?


The Holy Spirit equals Biblical understanding. Therefore Biblical understanding equals the indwelling of the Holy Spirit.

The indwelling of the Holy Spirit equals evidence of Salvation ("Sealed"). Therefore your Salvation is evidenced by your ability to understand Scripture.

Is my mathematic holding true? One plus one equals two? It's hard to tell any more with "new math" and other such new innovations and contrivances. There is no telling what anything means any more.


Holding that what I have just said is accurate, what would you say of someone who believes and follows the dictates of False Doctrine?

If understanding Scripture means the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, which is the evidence of ones Salvation, then doesn't it hold true that the opposite is also true?


If someone believes in false doctrine, wouldn't it mean that person is without the Holy Spirit, therefore also without Salvation?


How many people (considering the above to be true and accurate) are fully believing themselves to be Spirit Filled, thereby Saved - yet also are believing in False Doctrine?

Kind of a scary thought, don't you think?


The World abounds in False Doctrine - and so do the churches. And according to my writings, almost everyone is believing False Doctrine in one form or another. So by this, reason says it is much easier to discount what I say than to discount what everyone else says. Wouldn't you say? Especially if it means discounting what your church teaches - even if your church is one of those considered by "Respectable" churches as a "cult."


So False Doctrine equals the lack of Salvation, at least according to the afore stated equation.

But is there any other option? I mean, is it possible that someone might believe a little bit of False Doctrine and still be Saved? Is it possible that someone can have just a tiny bit of cancer and still be cancer free?


Strangely enough, I believe that is a possibility. Let's consider this:


When a person is first "converted," he or she is not instantaneously made into a fully mature, Spirit Filled Christian any more than a baby is mature when he is born. The baby is just as much born, and just as much human, in spite of his immaturity, but he has a lot of growing to do, and a lot of knowledge to acquire. In that same vein a new Christian is born into the Body of Christ, that is "Born Again," but he or she has a lot of maturing to do. And just as the baby is totally born at birth, so is the Christian totally "Born Again," and thereby Saved at his conversion.

[ This brings another question to mind, thereby another study altogether - can the baby become again unborn? Can the Born Again Christian become again un born again? I don't see how. However, the baby can die from his new life. Can the Born Again also die from his new life as well?

The Seed of the Holy Spirit is also small and has very little influence on the new convert. The heart has to be broken down and made new so that the Seed may grow and thereby attain influence in the life of the new believer. This is a cooperative endeavor that requires effort on both the new believer, and God. I have covered this subject quite fully elsewhere, so I will not expound on it here.]

As a baby matures he is influenced by many things - in fact all things. He grasps at everything and believes everything. He does not understand the concept of "lie," or "False Doctrines" (fables), so therefore he becomes and believes whatever is presented to him, especially if what he is presented with appeals to his selfish desires.


As he matures, he finds he has certain attributes that allow him to grow beyond that which he has been taught. And he has also learns to question what he has been, and is being taught. I should say he has those attributes, but few people choose to exercise them preferring instead to follow fashion and the dictates of the World, which is much easier.


So it is with a new Christian. He (or she) follows whatever doctrine is presented to him, assuming it to be the Truth. He listens to the preacher, and reads in the Bible that which confirms what he is taught, and never grows beyond the "Milk" of the Word that he has been fed from "birth."

Therefore, the new convert remains a baby, never growing in the Lord, but instead he continues to learn only that which is taught by his church, that is, he learns and memorizes that which is "fashionable."


And herein lie the dangers of False Doctrine.


What would become of a child who is brought up in a brothel, or a night club? What happens to a child raised by head-hunter parents? By Atheists? Consider the story of Oliver Twist, or Jungle Book.


False Doctrines ("Traditions"), like nursery rhymes to a child -- are intended as "Milk" to the baby Christian. In themselves, that is as milk, they help a new convert understand some principals that are hard to explain. However, the churches, and the church leaders who themselves have grown up on the milk, eventually believe they have the final Truth which they cling to and forbid their adherents to grow beyond.


And hereby lies the ultimate danger of False Doctrine.


Within each new Christian is the Holy Spirit. The purpose (at least a purpose) of the Holy Spirit is to instruct. But how can the Holy Spirit instruct those who have their ears and their attention tuned to those who are supposed to be instructing the Christian to listen to their heart, that is, the Holy Spirit?


There is a war going on within each Christian. That war is not with the World, as is being taught by the churches. Supposedly that war has already been won. That is not to say the Christian is no longer influenced by the World and worldly desires, but the Holy Spirit within him or her has taken them out of the World and placed them in the Church.

And the war is now between the Holy Spirit and the church the new Christian has been entrusted to.


Who do you listen to?

And if you listen to the wrong source, who do you think will be the loser?


Jesus made reference to this battle in one of His best known parables. The problem is that this parable, as well as a great deal other of what Jesus and the Bible tells us, has been misdirected so the important message has been lost in "Tradition," just as God's laws and intentions had been lost in the "Tradition of the Elders" of Jesus' time (Mat 15:1-11). Here is the parable. See if you can find yourself in it (Hint -- the "Seed" is the "Word," as well as the Holy Spirit which is required to grow you into the image of Christ, and to give you the Spiritual Ears with which to understand the parable):

9Knowing this, that the law is not made for a righteous man, but for the lawless and disobedient, for the ungodly and for sinners, for unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for manslayers, 10For whoremongers, for them that defile themselves with mankind, for menstealers, for liars, for perjured persons, and if there be any other thing that is contrary to sound doctrine; 11According to the glorious gospel of the blessed God, which was committed to my trust. 1Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils; 2Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron; (1Tim 4:)

12Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity. 13Till I come, give attendance to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine. 14Neglect not the gift that is in thee, which was given thee by prophecy, with the laying on of the hands of the presbytery. 15Meditate upon these things; give thyself wholly to them; that thy profiting may appear to all. 16Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine; continue in them: for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself, and them that hear thee. 17Let the elders that rule well be counted worthy of double honour, especially they who labour in the word and doctrine. (1Tim 5:)


1Let as many servants as are under the yoke count their own masters worthy of all honour, that the name of God and his doctrine be not blasphemed. 2And they that have believing masters, let them not despise them, because they are brethren; but rather do them service, because they are faithful and beloved, partakers of the benefit. These things teach and exhort. 3If any man teach otherwise, and consent not to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which is according to godliness; 4He is proud, knowing nothing, but doting about questions and strifes of words, whereof cometh envy, strife, railings, evil surmisings, 5Perverse disputings of men of corrupt minds, and destitute of the truth, supposing that gain is godliness: from such withdraw thyself. 10But thou hast fully known my doctrine, manner of life, purpose, faith, longsuffering, charity, patience, 11Persecutions, afflictions, which came unto me at Antioch, at Iconium, at Lystra; what persecutions I endured: but out of them all the Lord delivered me. 12Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution. 13But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived. (2Tim 3:)


16All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: 17That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.(2Tim 3:)


2Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine. 3For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; 4And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables. 1But speak thou the things which become sound doctrine: 2That the aged men be sober, grave, temperate, sound in faith, in charity, in patience. 3The aged women likewise, that they be in behaviour as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things; 4That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children, 5To be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed. 6Young men likewise exhort to be sober minded. 7In all things showing thyself a pattern of good works: in doctrine showing uncorruptness, gravity, sincerity, 8Sound speech, that cannot be condemned; that he that is of the contrary part may be ashamed, having no evil thing to say of you. 9Exhort servants to be obedient unto their own masters, and to please them well in all things; not answering again; 10Not purloining, but showing all good fidelity; that they may adorn the doctrine of God our Saviour in all things. (Titus 2:)


1Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God, 2Of the doctrine of baptisms, and of laying on of hands, and of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment. 3And this will we do, if God permit. 4For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost, 5And have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come, 6If they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame. (Heb 6:)


9Be not carried about with divers and strange doctrines. For it is a good thing that the heart be established with grace; not with meats, which have not profited them that have been occupied therein. (Heb 13:)


5And now I beseech thee, lady, not as though I wrote a new commandment unto thee, but that which we had from the beginning, that we love one another. 6And this is love, that we walk after his commandments. This is the commandment, That, as ye have heard from the beginning, ye should walk in it.

7For many deceivers are entered into the world, who confess not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh. This is a deceiver and an antichrist. 8Look to yourselves, that we lose not those things which we have wrought, but that we receive a full reward. 9Whosoever transgresseth, and abideth not in the doctrine of Christ, hath not God. He that abideth in the doctrine of Christ, he hath both the Father and the Son.

10If there come any unto you, and bring not this doctrine, receive him not into your house, neither bid him God speed: 11For he that biddeth him God speed is partaker of his evil deeds.

12Having many things to write unto you, I would not write with paper and ink: but I trust to come unto you, and speak face to face, that our joy may be full. 13The children of thy elect sister greet thee. Amen. (2John :)


18Let no man beguile you of your reward in a voluntary humility and worshipping of angels, intruding into those things which he hath not seen, vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind, 19And not holding the Head, from which all the body by joints and bands having nourishment ministered, and knit together, increaseth with the increase of God. 20Wherefore if ye be dead with Christ from the rudiments of the world, why, as though living in the world, are ye subject to ordinances, 21(Touch not; taste not; handle not; 22Which all are to perish with the using;) after the commandments and doctrines of men? 23Which things have indeed a show of wisdom in will worship, and humility, and neglecting of the body; not in any honour to the satisfying of the flesh. 21And I gave her space to repent of her fornication; and she repented not. 22Behold, I will cast her into a bed, and them that commit adultery with her into great tribulation, except they repent of their deeds. 23And I will kill her children with death; and all the churches shall know that I am he which searcheth the reins and hearts: and I will give unto every one of you according to your works. 24But unto you I say, and unto the rest in Thyatira, as many as have not this doctrine, and which have not known the depths of Satan, as they speak; I will put upon you none other burden. 25But that which ye have already hold fast till I come. 1And I, brethren, could not speak unto you as unto spiritual, but as unto carnal, even as unto babes in Christ. 2I have fed you with milk, and not with meat: for hitherto ye were not able to bear it, neither yet now are ye able. 3For ye are yet carnal: for whereas there is among you envying, and strife, and divisions, are ye not carnal, and walk as men? 4For while one saith, I am of Paul; and another, I am of Apollos; are ye not carnal? 47Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me hath everlasting life. 48I am that bread of life. 49Your fathers did eat manna in the wilderness, and are dead. 50This is the bread which cometh down from heaven, that a man may eat thereof, and not die. 51I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world. 52The Jews therefore strove among themselves, saying, How can this man give us his flesh to eat? 53Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, ye have no life in you. 54Whoso eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day. 55For my flesh is meat indeed, and my blood is drink indeed. 56He that eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, dwelleth in me, and I in him. 57As the living Father hath sent me, and I live by the Father: so he that eateth me, even he shall live by me. 58This is that bread which came down from heaven: not as your fathers did eat manna, and are dead: he that eateth of this bread shall live for ever. (John 6:)


42Watch therefore: for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come. 43But know this, that if the goodman of the house had known in what watch the thief would come, he would have watched, and would not have suffered his house to be broken up. 44Therefore be ye also ready: for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of man cometh. 45Who then is a faithful and wise servant, whom his lord hath made ruler over his household, to give them meat in due season? 46Blessed is that servant, whom his lord when he cometh shall find so doing. 13Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ; 14As obedient children, not fashioning yourselves according to the former lusts in your ignorance: 15But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation; 16Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy. (1Pet 1:)


8A double minded man is unstable in all his ways. 9Let the brother of low degree rejoice in that he is exalted: 10But the rich, in that he is made low: because as the flower of the grass he shall pass away. 11For the sun is no sooner risen with a burning heat, but it withereth the grass, and the flower thereof falleth, and the grace of the fashion of it perisheth: so also shall the rich man fade away in his ways. 12Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him. (James 1:)


29But this I say, brethren, the time is short: it remaineth, that both they that have wives be as though they had none; 30And they that weep, as though they wept not; and they that rejoice, as though they rejoiced not; and they that buy, as though they possessed not; 31And they that use this world, as not abusing it: for the fashion of this world passeth away. 32But I would have you without carefulness.
