SATAN'S TOOLS: BLESSINGS

11Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices. (2Cor 2:)


Blessings are from the Lord, right? As Christians all we have to do is ask God and He will shower us with blessings, everything we need or want. Right? All we have to do is have faith that we will eventually receive it, and we get what we ask for, Right? No doubt about it, God loves His own, and wants them happy and fulfilled.

And of course this must be so because I hear it from every pulpit, from every radio sermon, and from every tract I have ever seen or read. Surely all those Bible experts can't be wrong. Of course, just to play it safe, I do hear some preachers tone down their message a bit by saying God doesn't give us everything right away, and that some things are held from us for our own good. But we are supposed to be happy with what we have, if we are blessed with riches, then be thankful for those riches and make best use of them. Be a "good steward" so-to-speak. And to make sure we understand just what the preacher means by what he says, and to demonstrate his faith in what he says, he takes good care of his mansion and his several fine cars.


For some reason I have been finding a different view of wealth than those of the churches. I've been seeing this in both my own life, and in the life of others I try to talk about moving forward in their Spiritual life. It seems that the closer I get to having them understand what I'm talking about, the more blessings they receive. Of course these blessings cause them to be happier, and more content: and the more content they are, the more time they spend on that which makes them content, and the less time they have to seek the Lord. And along with this, the more they are blessed, the less they seem to feel a need to move forward in the Lord, because they must already be in good standing with God, because God is blessing them so much.


Hmmmm.


In my own experience, I have what would be considered very little, yet I have far more than I have ever had in my life. This "wealth" I now possess causes me more hardship and discontentment then it does happiness and pleasure. I have been given an opportunity, resources, and a place with which to do the job I have been given by the Lord. At the same time I also have many other advantages and opportunities that tend to draw me away from my duty. I sometimes find I have to resist my own desires and keep myself grounded in what I have been given to do.

When a child is growing up, and when in school, and then as an adult in the service: there is little problem with knowing what we are to do. Someone else is always there to make sure we know what to do, and just how to do it, and to make sure it is done. But when we are no longer within the confines of that wall built by others, we find that making correct decisions is not as easy as we had believed it to be. Freedom is not as freeing as we had assumed. There is a desire to crawl back into that womb of having someone else responsible for us. This is one reason why prisons, the armed services, and mental hospitals are so full. In these there are others to take our sense of responsibilities from us, and to supply our needs.

It is not practical for all of us to seek the security of prison or the armed forces. Some must remain in the lurch of daily life in order to establish a balance for the society we live in. Those of us in such a situation must find other ways to deal with our lack of stability and our desire for more than that which we have.

Fortunately for us there are plenty of people in this world ready and ever so willing to offer that security, or advice on how to achieve that security: for a sum.

We have psychologists, the media, the schools, books, and a multitude of other sources at our elbow to help us acquire what we want, that we are told will make us happy, and without having to do a thing for it.

And this is never more true then in the realm of the church.


In the Old Testament we see that God provided a system whereby those who were called His people would always know exactly what to do under any given situation. And as long as His people followed His rules to the letter they would be provided with everything they needed, and more. This system did not work because man continually wants more than he has, and he is not satisfied with what he has.

This has changed considerably in this age of the New Testament. We now see, so it appears, that God has changed His mind and is now giving His people complete liberty. Now we can do whatever we want, as long as we've taken a bath; and He is ever anxious to shower us with blessings. We are told that God gives us His Holy Spirit, and that the Holy Spirit will do all the work of cleaning us up. We have to do nothing, or very little at least, to reap the benefits "promised" to us. And this because God loves us so much.

We have even gone to such an extreme that many of the churches (and the number of these is growing by leaps and bounds) that teach nothing at all need be done, and that God will save everyone in the end anyway.


Hmmmm.


I have been noticing in my own life a growing trend toward "blessings" coming my way. It seems the closer I get to the Lord, the better I get at handling my negative thoughts, attitudes and habits: the more blessings come my way. I find people insisting they pay me for something I do for them (I don't take pay for favors, it robs me of my intent, and the feeling of satisfaction I derive for having done the "good deed"). When I am given money, I find someone who needs it and give it to them.

I am essentially on welfare, yet I have a Platinum credit card with a huge credit line, which keeps getting bigger the less I use it. And I have others anxious to lend me credit. And lately I found hundreds of dollars in my checking account that I can't imagine where it came from. I'm sure I must have put it there somehow, it came from nowhere else. Of course I have plenty of things I could spend that money on--repair my place, a carburetor and paint for my 38 year old van, and of course some goodies for myself. The thought is tempting, but I knew the Lord has not provided me with the means to do any of these things.

I wondered about this excess money, and exclaimed to God that I know he must have intended it for somebody else -- immediately the "somebody else appeared. I still have far too much to feel like I am living on God's provision, on "daily bread." But now I also know that I have the willingness to pass on what is put in my hand that He has intended for another purpose.


The Church is like a pool of water. That pool holds just so much water. Rains and floods may come, but what excess goes into that pool spills over the top and does not remain a part of the pool.

Each member of the church extracts what they need from the pool. Those who have more than they need places the excess into the pool. Those with needs extract from the pool. Everyone's needs are met, but wants are avoided.

If we take a bucket of water from one end of the pool and pour into the other end of the pool, the pool remains the same although part of what the pool consists of has changed places.

People who lust, those who want more than their share, steal from the pool. They rob from their fellow Christians, and they rob from God. When we see a fellow Christian with much, then we know that person has taken from, and does not care about his or her "family" of God.

We are to love our neighbor as ourselves. Our neighbor is not part of our family. Jesus gave an example of who a neighbor is, and the neighbor in His example was not only out of our family, but out of our good graces altogether.

When we keep the World's good for ourselves, we are showing disregard for our neighbor, and for God's provisions as well.

We are told to abandon our desires, our wants, our will, our family, our flesh: and come and follow Him. Hanging on to what has been placed in our hands, which very likely is intended as a test to see if we will cling to it or pass it on, is just the opposite of "abandoning all and following Jesus." Don't you agree? Perhaps you don't.


The following are some samples of Scripture that speaks on the value of riches. I challenge you to find in them a single verse that indicates we should be seeking the wealth of this world:




ABOUT POVERTY

9Provide neither gold, nor silver, nor brass in your purses, 10Nor scrip for your journey, neither two coats, neither shoes, nor yet staves: for the workman is worthy of his meat. (Mat 10:)

ABOUT RICHES:


22He also that received seed among the thorns is he that heareth the word; and the care of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, choke the word, and he becometh unfruitful. (Mat 22)


3And when he heard this, he was very sorrowful: for he was very rich. 24And when Jesus saw that he was very sorrowful, he said, How hardly shall they that have riches enter into the kingdom of God! 25For it is easier for a camel to go through a needle's eye, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God. 26And they that heard it said, Who then can be saved? 9And I say unto you, Make to yourselves friends of the mammon of unrighteousness; that, when ye fail, they may receive you into everlasting habitations. 10He that is faithful in that which is least is faithful also in much: and he that is unjust in the least is unjust also in much. 11If therefore ye have not been faithful in the unrighteous mammon, who will commit to your trust the true riches? 12And if ye have not been faithful in that which is another man's, who shall give you that which is your own? PROMISE TO THOSE WHO FOLLOW JESUS:

13For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ. 14And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. 15Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works. (2Cor 11:)


24But woe unto you that are rich! for ye have received your consolation. 25Woe unto you that are full! for ye shall hunger. Woe unto you that laugh now! for ye shall mourn and weep. 26Woe unto you, when all men shall speak well of you! for so did their fathers to the false prophets. (Luke 6:)


43Why do ye not understand my speech? even because ye cannot hear my word. 44Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it. 45And because I tell you the truth, ye believe me not. (John 8:)


1I charge thee therefore before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the quick and the dead at his appearing and his kingdom; 2Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine. 3For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; 4And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables. (2Tim 4:)


12To whom he said, This is the rest wherewith ye may cause the weary to rest; and this is the refreshing: yet they would not hear. 13But the word of the LORD was unto them precept upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little; that they might go, and fall backward, and be broken, and snared, and taken. (Isaiah 28:)


13Wherefore the Lord said, Forasmuch as this people draw near me with their mouth, and with their lips do honour me, but have removed their heart far from me, and their fear toward me is taught by the precept of men: 14Therefore, behold, I will proceed to do a marvellous work among this people, even a marvellous work and a wonder: for the wisdom of their wise men shall perish, and the understanding of their prudent men shall be hid. 15Woe unto them that seek deep to hide their counsel from the LORD, and their works are in the dark, and they say, Who seeth us? and who knoweth us? (Isaiah 29:)



Well, the evidence is in: what's your verdict? Are the preachers right? Does the Bible tell us to have all the riches we want just as long as we are thankful for them? Or did you perchance find another conclusion?
