Holiness

SET APART

"Knock three times and give a long whistle."

"Hold your right hand in the shape of a V, and touch your nose with your pinkie finger."

"What! You don't know our secret code? Then you're just one of those people. You can't come in."

Everybody wants to be special, to be different, to be "set apart" from the rest of the world. So we devise systems whereby we can do just that. It may be a club, or an organization, or it may even be a church affiliation.

Whatever it may be that you have chosen to make you feel special and set apart, you know it has to be the best one, and the right one. And how do you know this? Obviously; because you belong to it!

Now me, I go along with the old adage: "Why should I want to belong to any organization so desperate as to take me for a member?"

Clubs, organizations and churches, in order to prove they are important, special and better than others have programs whereby they serve the community in one capacity or another. This is good; it helps others in the community as well as boosts one's self-esteem.

These organizations also have rules that must be followed. And in order to be a superior group, it must have superior and strict rules its members must abide by.

And so each member of the organization will know just what they are to do, there are creeds, or if it is a church, it will have a doctrine and very likely a synopsis of that doctrine called "Articles of Faith."

God also has His "Club." And He has His "Clubhouse." In the past His club, or more specifically, His People were the Jews. God took His People through a training ground (the wilderness) by way of miracles and direct leadership and brought them into His own land where He planted them with the intent that they would keep the land pure and free of disobedience. You notice I said God's land, not the Jew's land. God only let them live on His land as long as they were willing to do their part of the Covenant (Lease contract) and take care of the land as He prescribed. When the Jews did neither, God kicked them out of His land and put on them the curses He threatened them with (Lev Chapters 25 & 26.) God gave His People very precise rules and codes to follow in order to insure they remain pure and separated from the rest of the polluted world. There were not only rules and laws that had to be followed to the letter, but rules governing diet and health; and even markings like circumcision and phylacteries that were to make them distinctive. God even had a Clubhouse built, the Tabernacle, and then the Temple, wherein He resided and controlled the workings of the People.

All of this God placed on His people in order to keep them separate from the world, in other words; Sanctified, Consecrated, Set Apart - Holy.

But the People, like a toddler drawn to an open door, continually turned away from their oath of obedience and desired to follow other gods, or do that which was "right in their own eyes."

Eventually, after many rebellions and forgivenesses, God cleared the Clubhouse and the grounds, and turned it over instead to nature and the wild beasts (Gentiles) who had never taken an oath or even acknowledged God, and could not be at peace nor take advantage of the grounds they now held.

The final blow to the Hebrews was when they rejected the very One they were so ardently looking for, and had been promised: Their Redeemer, their Messiah.

Because they rejected their Messiah, they lost everything: and we, the Gentiles gained everything.

That is, we now have the opportunity to gain everything.

Throughout the world, God is looking for people to plant in His grounds. But, rather than train an entire nation of people as He did the Jews, He has, through Himself, established one Perfect Plant from which Seeds may be produced and planted in fertile earth. From these Seeds (the Holy Spirit) God intends to bring forth a harvest of Special People exactly like that first Plant; a Plant that, like all other plants, had to die in order to scatter its seed.

In order to bring the Hebrew children out of the World (Egypt) God performed many miracles. He brought them through a great body of water into their wilderness, then a small river (the Jordan) in order to bring them into the Promised Land, for which they had to fight in order to acquire.

In this latter time God has somewhat reversed the order in that He performed less spectacular miracles (healings, raise the dead) in order to establish His identity before leading His "Seedlings" people into a wilderness experience. Then, at the end of the journey there will be devastating miracles like those of Egypt through which these Seedlings will enter into the Promised Land.

But like the Hebrew children, these Seedlings will have to fight their way into that land.

THE MAZE

God does not have a draft board. He is looking for volunteers. And though there are many volunteers after the Benefits God has to offer (although He does draft some, like the prophets and Paul) His soldiers, very few who volunteer are willing to follow His orders, or even listen for His commands. In fact, most of the volunteers never even bother to read the Book of Rules God supplies; but rather, if they do anything at all, they listen to what other, often slothful and uninformed volunteers have to say the Book of Rules says.

God, in order to eliminate those who are not sincere; and who wish only to satisfy themselves and not the "Club;" and those who are good starters but fall to the wayside when the going no longer pleases them, has created a Maze through which all volunteers must pass. And though this Maze is long and confusing, it has many, many exits where a participant my quit and return to their old ways if they so choose. And to appease those who wish to be appeased, many of these exits furnish a certificate (called a "Doctrine") which indicates they, though proven quitters, will receive all the benefits that those who finish the course (wilderness testing) will receive. However, should any person who chooses to accept such a certificate were to read what is written on the back (and in the Book of Rules) they would find that the certificate they hold as assurance is null and void if Testing has not been fully and satisfactorily completed.

In real life, a soldier who quits (deserters), or retreats, or even fails to move when they are commanded to move forward, are shot, or at least imprisoned and marked for life. It was the same for the Israelites; those who refused to move on, or did not obey the command given them were either forced out of the camp, or stoned.

At the entrance of the Maze all participants must take their Introductory Examination. This Exam is to insure that no pollution of Self or the World is brought in to the Wilderness Journey.

First, as any soldier knows, is the taking of the Oath. But unlike an enlistee into the Armed Forces where one raises a hand and repeats some words, the participant prostrates himself (or herself) before the Lord, their Commander, in total submission, and with a contrite and broken heart ready to be replaced with a heart of flesh. To the Hebrew this was exemplified by Passover where they killed the lamb, spread the blood over the doorpost, emptied their house and their self of leaven (sin), and stood prepared to leave at a moment's notice. That is, they were told to "Watch" (be prepared Ex 12:11). Those who failed to perform this order to the letter would be subject to the Death Angel sent by the Lord intended for the world, not God's own children. However, those who refused to listen to God (Moses) were considered as not God's children, but part of the "world" (Rom 8:1-9) and therefore subject to the Death Angel. In the wilderness those who proved themselves as not true followers of God were either sent out of the camp, or were stoned to death.

Many fain (fake) this vital experience of submission, or look for ways by which they can bypass submission, but they will soon find the going more than they had anticipated and search out the first exit that will supply them with a certificate of completion.

Second is Baptism by water unto Repentance, and Confession one to another. This Exam clears one from all past sins, and through repentance insures a fresh start as a Soldier of the Cross. The Jews experienced a baptism of their faith by moving forward through the Red Sea. This baptism to the prepared Hebrew was an escape from bondage and an entrance into servitude to God in preparation for entering into God's Promises. To the unredeemed and unrepentant, that is the Egyptians, this baptism became a grave where, though they entered in to the waters of submission, death and burial (which baptism represents), they did not receive the resurrected new life that awaited those who had prepared themselves. I have no doubt but that each of the Egyptians had the faith to get them through to the other side; their entrance into the water shows that to be true. But faith without preparation is useless. Faith without a basis for faith is like the old proverb describing the dangers of having great faith in a failing bridge.

As in the natural, an initial baptism is good for the moment, but dirt (sin, ego) has a way of accumulating on us once again. Yet nothing impure or soiled is to enter in to the presents of God, therefore is not allowed into the Promised land. The priests, before entering the Sanctuary (Tabernacle where God resides) first had to make sure they were unspotted by the world. In order to accomplish this there was a laver (wash basin) outside the Tabernacle made of the looking glasses (brass mirrors) of the women whereby the priests could see themselves, therefor their spots of sin, and it had water with which to wash the sin away. It also had a lower basin of water whereby the priests could wash their feet. Jesus did this for His disciples. The washing of the disciple's feet, signifying daily repentance for our daily sins, not only cleansing them of the contamination of the world, but prepared them for entrance into the presence of God. Another example of this procedure is Jesus' instruction to shake the dust from their feet as they left a house or a city that did not accept them and the Gospel. In this day and age we think Jesus' work on the cross alleviates any need for our own purification. Sacrifice, that is the death we must face for our sin, was symbolically accomplished through the ritual shedding of blood of an animal. Jesus accomplished this in actuality rather than symbolically - however the sin He bore was not His own, but ours. All we have to do is accept His sacrifice, then enter the Maze where we will be taught to follow directions as were the Hebrew children during their Maze experience.

But, like in the days of the Old Testament, this generation thinks it can make up its own rules and do that which is right in their own eyes. Jesus called the consequences of such thinking "wailing and gnashing of teeth."

A soldier, when he or she prepares to board the train, kisses his family and loved ones goodbye, sheds his old clothes and his old, self-serving nature, and readies himself to be supplied with an entirely new life and an entirely new set of clothes, attitudes, and associates. He knows that his past life is over, and a new life of adventure begins. He knows he can no longer plan for the future, nor even supply his own daily bread outside of the organization (God's Church).

In the wilderness the Jews experienced two important things. The first of these is the training of God's people. These people were taught to be organized, to work as a team, to rid themselves of ego so they could be "molded" like clay into functioning vessels fit for the Lord's service. Also, and more importantly, these "trainees" were taught to listen to their Commander, the Lord God Himself. And though there were times God spoke to these people personally from a cloud; they were told to listen to the one He selected and had trained to be His spokesman - Moses. To the Israelites Moses was to be as God, and Aaron (and thereby the Priesthood) was to be the voice of Moses (Ex 4:14-17).

The second function of the wilderness experience is the weeding out of the disobedient, the rebellious, the murmurers, and those unwilling to listen to those God set up as His spokesman. In the New Testament these are referred to as dead branches, that is -- deadwood. At the end of their training they were brought up to the border of the land they were to inhabit, and 12 spies were sent in to check out the land. The thought was, as it seems, that these spys would return with great tales that would encourage the Jews to move into their land. After forty days the spies returned loaded down with the lush fruit of the land - and with tales of the impossibility of their being able to take the land.

By their denying their ability (and their murmuring), they were not showing disbelief in them self, but in God. For their lack of faith, God turned His back on them and said all of them over the age of 20 would die in the wilderness they refused to leave.

A note of interest that I believe is often missed when this story is read; although the Israelites angered God and were sent to die in the wilderness, they immediately repented and fought their way into the land, without God's support, and were slaughtered. This indicates to me that repentance, and even obedience is not enough. When God speaks, we have to be ready now, because He will withdraw from us, and our works of obedience are no longer with God's approval. Check out these verses for Paul's take on this subject (Heb 6:6; 12:17). Also consider the Ten Virgins in this light (Mat 25:1-13; Luke13:24-27).

Disobedience in the wilderness was manifest. Every one disobeyed God. Aaron and Miriam murmured against God by complaining about Moses. Thousands upon thousands died from plages and serpents and other forms of punishment because of their murmuring and complaining about Moses and his ways, who was doing nothing more than relating what God had said.

Aaron finally committed his greatest sin with the golden calf - a symbol of the Priesthood turning to the ways of the world. Jesus had to deal with murmuring, as well as a priesthood that was listening to the world rather than to God.

And so it is today - with thousands upon thousands of preachers and churches having gone the way of Baalim, looking for the weaknesses of God's people rather than helping them along the right road on their journey. Of course I mean all the cults and other denominations and churches - not yours!

In the Army a big part of Basic Training is simulated combat. This prepares the soldier to be acquainted with the obstacles and dangers he will face in the field of battle. Every possible situation is simulated and prepared for. In WWII, after a long period of peace, the first wave of soldiers were not prepared for war, partially because they had no enemy situation for which to prepare; and the relaxed atmosphere of peace had caused the soldiers to become somewhat slothful. This wreaked havoc on our military force; Pearl Harbor an outstanding example.

Peace time creates loose discipline.

In the early church (and around the world today except the affluent Western cultures) Christians were trained to never let their guard down because danger lay on every side. When we are in danger, we become like the independent two year old who thinks he can take care of himself - until danger appears and he runs to hide behind mother's skirt. We Westerners are told to prepare ourselves for the fiery spitballs of the enemy directed at us for our faith, such as sideways glances and name calling; while Christians around the world face guns and fires and imprisonment and death.

God said He wants us to remain in the safety of His wings (like chicks with a mother hen) at all times. He doesn't want us wondering away like the proverbial lost sheep. But we, like the Israelites, do not listen to God.

Moses said there would be another to arise like unto him, and that all the world is to listen to Him. We know he was referring to Jesus. We know it is Jesus who is to "be like God" as Moses was.

And we know (I assume we all know) that the Pastors and the Elders of the church are to be like the Levites, that is, spokesmen for Jesus.

This of course makes sense. It is unreasonable for us to assume we can, once converted, understand what God wants us to do: That is, know how to be a good Christian.

Of course we have the Bible with which to learn how Christians are to behave. But primarily it is the church who has the responsibility of showing us the way, and to be the mouthpiece for Jesus, thereby God.

Yet! There are thousands of mouthpieces, supposedly all speaking for the same God, all saying something different and accusing one another of leading God's people astray. Like Korah and the many objectors in the wilderness, and the mummers, who wanted to find leaders who would take them back to Egypt because they tired of the manna and the "daily bread" that God supplied them with. They wanted more, yet in their foolishness they wanted to return to that very place they were so anxious to leave because of the bondage they had been under. They had been praying for God to save them, and when He did, they didn't like His methods, so they rebelled against Him. Today we also complain about God's ways of dealing with us ("Why does God...?"), then we turn our backs on Him while still imagining we are His "children," and all this with the blessing of the church.

When we choose to turn from God, our thinking goes awry. We become wise in our own eyes, and fools fit for nothing but the dung pile in God's eyes (Rom 1:28; Mat 5:13).

Soldiers are taught to "Watch." Part of a soldier's training is to watch for the enemy. Sometimes, in effort to make sure the enemy doesn't get through to vital parts of his outfit, a soldier will become over-anxious and shoot at that he knows nothing of. We hear about this all the time in the news; an airplane or a soldier - or a policeman is killed by "friendly fire," that is, by his own comrades.

The church is not immune to this kind of danger. There's a lot of jabbing and threatening and back-stabbing amongst the clergy and parishioners in every corner of the church as a whole.

Aren't I doing the same? No, I'm not. I'm not accusing any body of anything; I'm accusing every body, including myself.

The enemy is not the only person a soldier is taught to watch for. He is also taught to keep on his toes in case a superior officer happens to suddenly come upon him.

When I was in the Army I was pretty good at reciting the nomenclature of the various weapons used. So when we were in the field there was great effort on the company's part to have me where the Commanding Officer was expected to arrive. This was done because the CO was bound to ask that first "Watch" questions that would reflect on the entire Company. Sometimes getting me to the foxhole where the CO was to arrive required uprooting me several times as the CO was reported to be in different places at different times.

We are told to "Watch." We are not told what to watch for, nor in which direction or at what time to watch.

So we watch. Do we really? I don't think so. We talk about watching. We think we are watching - but ask anyone what they are watching for and I doubt they could do anything more than babble.

Two thousand years ago Christians were told to watch. Why? Since that time billions of people have been watching for they know not what. Have they been watching in vain?

Many people believe that Jesus has already returned in the form of the Holy Spirit. Is this perhaps what we should be watching for? I think it is clear that Jesus was talking about the end-times when He said we are to be watching for Him. And I think it is also clear by reading the Scriptures that He will be returning Himself bodily.

Keep in mind what I have said so many times before - don't look at either-or, but at and. With either-or we are stuck with the personal return of Jesus and nothing else - even though the Bible is just as clear that there is something else. Either-or thinking breaks the church into fragment, often calling one fragment a 'cult'" and the other fragments, not a cult, but just as wrong.

Jesus is coming back again bodily. It takes some real mangling of the Scriptures and cutting big holes in its pages to deny this. But it is just as obvious that Jesus is with us right now in the form of the Holy Spirit - as is the Father. It takes another sharp pair of scissors to deny this as well.

So, which is true? They both are true. And how many people have been watching the clouds for the bodily appearance of Jesus, and missed looking into their hearts for His Spiritual return because they weren't informed that they should? And without accepting the Spiritual return of Jesus, it is pointless to wait for His Physical return. To do so is like waiting for an express train without having either a ticket or the wherewithal to purchase one.

Take another look at the Hebrew children. They denied God's ability and refused to enter into the Promised Land when God was ready to lead them in, and when they changed their minds, God did not, but rather let them all die in the wilderness.

I see a lot of people slothfully sitting around feeling "good enough" to be yanked up to heaven, yet they have been doing the very same things that caused the Hebrews to miss their opportunity to enter in to God's Promises.

This is one of the great problems I see with Traditions and the force behind them: denominationalism. It blinds people to the Truth of what is needed in order to get them the Eternal life they are expecting. Again, I have to leave a bunch of holes in my study because of all the Fantasies that must be corrected and elaborated on in order to present them so they make any sense at all. They will be done little by little in future studies.

I said above that I believe there is a multitude of people being led astray from the Truth that will bring them to Eternal life. Although that is precisely what I said, I am not totally convinced that this is true. I have to allow for the strong possibility that those who are looking for the easy way are doing so because that is all they want; That if they knew the Truth for certain, without a doubt, they would still do just what they are doing because the Truth is not what they want to hear.

As evidence of this I present the Hebrews who knew beyond a doubt that God was there leading them, and almost every one of them - including Aaron, rebelled and denied Him. And there are the Pharisees who refused to accept Jesus, even with all the evidence, before and after His resurrection. And there are all the "wolves who Paul had to deal with in the Church who were subverting all he was doing in effort to get the Church on its feet.

But in spite of all of this, if there is but one person who is looking for the Truth, at least a form of it, and is helped by what I write, then all these writings have been worth the effort.

(Heb 13:5; John 14:17; also Mark 13:33-36; 14:32-41; Luke 12:34-40; 21:34-36; Rev 3:3).

35But they which shall be accounted worthy to obtain that world, and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry, nor are given in marriage: 36Neither can they die any more: for they are equal unto the angels; and are the children of God, being the children of the resurrection. (John 20:)

16And he saw that there was no man, and wondered that there was no intercessor: therefore his arm brought salvation unto him; and his righteousness, it sustained him. 17For he put on righteousness as a breastplate, and an helmet of salvation upon his head; and he put on the garments of vengeance for clothing, and was clad with zeal as a cloak. 18According to their deeds, accordingly he will repay, fury to his adversaries, recompense to his enemies; to the islands he will repay recompense. 19So shall they fear the name of the LORD from the west, and his glory from the rising of the sun. When the enemy shall come in like a flood, the Spirit of the LORD shall lift up a standard against him. 20And the Redeemer shall come to Zion, and unto them that turn from transgression in Jacob, saith the LORD. 21As for me, this is my covenant with them, saith the LORD; My spirit that is upon thee, and my words which I have put in thy mouth, shall not depart out of thy mouth, nor out of the mouth of thy seed, nor out of the mouth of thy seed's seed, saith the LORD, from henceforth and for ever. 4Ye have not yet resisted unto blood, striving against sin. 5And ye have forgotten the exhortation which speaketh unto you as unto children, My son, despise not thou the chastening of the Lord, nor faint when thou art rebuked of him: 6For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth. 7If ye endure chastening, God dealeth with you as with sons; for what son is he whom the father chasteneth not? 8But if ye be without chastisement, whereof all are partakers, then are ye bastards, and not sons. 9Furthermore we have had fathers of our flesh which corrected us, and we gave them reverence: shall we not much rather be in subjection unto the Father of spirits, and live? 10For they verily for a few days chastened us after their own pleasure; but he for our profit, that we might be partakers of his holiness. 11Now no chastening for the present seemeth to be joyous, but grievous: nevertheless afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them which are exercised thereby. 12Wherefore lift up the hands which hang down, and the feeble knees; 13And make straight paths for your feet, lest that which is lame be turned out of the way; but let it rather be healed. 14Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord: 15Looking diligently lest any man fail of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby many be defiled; 16Lest there be any fornicator, or profane person, as Esau, who for one morsel of meat sold his birthright. 17For ye know how that afterward, when he would have inherited the blessing, he was rejected: for he found no place of repentance, though he sought it carefully with tears. (Heb 12:)

5And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge; 6And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness; 7And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity. 8For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9But he that lacketh these things is blind, and cannot see afar off, and hath forgotten that he was purged from his old sins. 10Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall: 11For so an entrance shall be ministered unto you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. 14But if ye will not hearken unto me, and will not do all these commandments; 15And if ye shall despise my statutes, or if your soul abhor my judgments, so that ye will not do all my commandments, but that ye break my covenant: 16I also will do this unto you; I will even appoint over you terror, consumption, and the burning ague, that shall consume the eyes, and cause sorrow of heart: and ye shall sow your seed in vain, for your enemies shall eat it. 17And I will set my face against you, and ye shall be slain before your enemies: they that hate you shall reign over you; and ye shall flee when none pursueth you. 18And if ye will not yet for all this hearken unto me, then I will punish you seven times more for your sins. 19And I will break the pride of your power; and I will make your heaven as iron, and your earth as brass: 20And your strength shall be spent in vain: for your land shall not yield her increase, neither shall the trees of the land yield their fruits.

21And if ye walk contrary unto me, and will not hearken unto me; I will bring seven times more plagues upon you according to your sins. 22I will also send wild beasts among you, which shall rob you of your children, and destroy your cattle, and make you few in number; and your high ways shall be desolate. 23And if ye will not be reformed by me by these things, but will walk contrary unto me; 24Then will I also walk contrary unto you, and will punish you yet seven times for your sins. 25And I will bring a sword upon you, that shall avenge the quarrel of my covenant: and when ye are gathered together within your cities, I will send the pestilence among you; and ye shall be delivered into the hand of the enemy. 26And when I have broken the staff of your bread, ten women shall bake your bread in one oven, and they shall deliver you your bread again by weight: and ye shall eat, and not be satisfied. 27And if ye will not for all this hearken unto me, but walk contrary unto me; 28Then I will walk contrary unto you also in fury; and I, even I, will chastise you seven times for your sins. 29And ye shall eat the flesh of your sons, and the flesh of your daughters shall ye eat. 30And I will destroy your high places, and cut down your images, and cast your carcases upon the carcases of your idols, and my soul shall abhor you. 31And I will make your cities waste, and bring your sanctuaries unto desolation, and I will not smell the savour of your sweet odours. 32And I will bring the land into desolation: and your enemies which dwell therein shall be astonished at it. 33And I will scatter you among the heathen, and will draw out a sword after you: and your land shall be desolate, and your cities waste. 34Then shall the land enjoy her sabbaths, as long as it lieth desolate, and ye be in your enemies' land; even then shall the land rest, and enjoy her sabbaths. 35As long as it lieth desolate it shall rest; because it did not rest in your sabbaths, when ye dwelt upon it. 36And upon them that are left alive of you I will send a faintness into their hearts in the lands of their enemies; and the sound of a shaken leaf shall chase them; and they shall flee, as fleeing from a sword; and they shall fall when none pursueth. 37And they shall fall one upon another, as it were before a sword, when none pursueth: and ye shall have no power to stand before your enemies. 38And ye shall perish among the heathen, and the land of your enemies shall eat you up. 39And they that are left of you shall pine away in their iniquity in your enemies' lands; and also in the iniquities of their fathers shall they pine away with them.

40If they shall confess their iniquity, and the iniquity of their fathers, with their trespass which they trespassed against me, and that also they have walked contrary unto me; 41And that I also have walked contrary unto them, and have brought them into the land of their enemies; if then their uncircumcised hearts be humbled, and they then accept of the punishment of their iniquity: 42Then will I remember my covenant with Jacob, and also my covenant with Isaac, and also my covenant with Abraham will I remember; and I will remember the land. 43The land also shall be left of them, and shall enjoy her sabbaths, while she lieth desolate without them: and they shall accept of the punishment of their iniquity: because, even because they despised my judgments, and because their soul abhorred my statutes. 44And yet for all that, when they be in the land of their enemies, I will not cast them away, neither will I abhor them, to destroy them utterly, and to break my covenant with them: for I am the LORD their God. 45But I will for their sakes remember the covenant of their ancestors, whom I brought forth out of the land of Egypt in the sight of the heathen, that I might be their God: I am the LORD. 46These are the statutes and judgments and laws, which the LORD made between him and the children of Israel in mount Sinai by the hand of Moses. 1There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. 2For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death. 3For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh: 4That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. 5For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit. 6For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. 7Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. 8So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God. 9But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his. (Rom 8:)

9As the Father hath loved me, so have I loved you: continue ye in my love. 10If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father's commandments, and abide in his love. 11These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full. 12This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you. 13Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. 14Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you. 11And the LORD said unto Moses, How long will this people provoke me? and how long will it be ere they believe me, for all the signs which I have showed among them? 12I will smite them with the pestilence, and disinherit them, and will make of thee a greater nation and mightier than they. . . . 20And the LORD said, I have pardoned according to thy word: 21But as truly as I live, all the earth shall be filled with the glory of the LORD. 22Because all those men which have seen my glory, and my miracles, which I did in Egypt and in the wilderness, and have tempted me now these ten times, and have not hearkened to my voice; 23Surely they shall not see the land which I sware unto their fathers, neither shall any of them that provoked me see it: 24But my servant Caleb, because he had another spirit with him, and hath followed me fully, him will I bring into the land whereinto he went; and his seed shall possess it. 25(Now the Amalekites and the Canaanites dwelt in the valley.) To morrow turn you, and get you into the wilderness by the way of the Red sea.

26And the LORD spake unto Moses and unto Aaron, saying, 27How long shall I bear with this evil congregation, which murmur against me? I have heard the murmurings of the children of Israel, which they murmur against me. 28Say unto them, As truly as I live, saith the LORD, as ye have spoken in mine ears, so will I do to you: 29Your carcases shall fall in this wilderness; and all that were numbered of you, according to your whole number, from twenty years old and upward, which have murmured against me, 30Doubtless ye shall not come into the land, concerning which I sware to make you dwell therein, save Caleb the son of Jephunneh, and Joshua the son of Nun. 31But your little ones, which ye said should be a prey, them will I bring in, and they shall know the land which ye have despised. 32But as for you, your carcases, they shall fall in this wilderness. 33And your children shall wander in the wilderness forty years, and bear your whoredoms, until your carcases be wasted in the wilderness. 34After the number of the days in which ye searched the land, even forty days, each day for a year, shall ye bear your iniquities, even forty years, and ye shall know my breach of promise. 35I the LORD have said, I will surely do it unto all this evil congregation, that are gathered together against me: in this wilderness they shall be consumed, and there they shall die. . . . 40And they rose up early in the morning, and gat them up into the top of the mountain, saying, Lo, we be here, and will go up unto the place which the LORD hath promised: for we have sinned. 41And Moses said, Wherefore now do ye transgress the commandment of the LORD? but it shall not prosper. 42Go not up, for the LORD is not among you; that ye be not smitten before your enemies. 43For the Amalekites and the Canaanites are there before you, and ye shall fall by the sword: because ye are turned away from the LORD, therefore the LORD will not be with you. 44But they presumed to go up unto the hill top: nevertheless the ark of the covenant of the LORD, and Moses, departed not out of the camp. 45Then the Amalekites came down, and the Canaanites which dwelt in that hill, and smote them, and discomfited them, even unto Hormah. The spirit truly is ready, but the flesh is weak. 39And again he went away, and prayed, and spake the same words. 40And when he returned, he found them asleep again, (for their eyes were heavy,) neither wist they what to answer him. 41And he cometh the third time, and saith unto them, Sleep on now, and take your rest: it is enough, the hour is come; behold, the Son of man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. 42Rise up, let us go; lo, he that betrayeth me is at hand. (Mark 14:)

1And unto the angel of the church in Sardis write; These things saith he that hath the seven Spirits of God, and the seven stars; I know thy works, that thou hast a name that thou livest, and art dead. 2Be watchful, and strengthen the things which remain, that are ready to die: for I have not found thy works perfect before God. 3Remember therefore how thou hast received and heard, and hold fast, and repent. If therefore thou shalt not watch, I will come on thee as a thief, and thou shalt not know what hour I will come upon thee. (Rev 3:)
