TYPES AND SHADOWS

Introduction

16Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days: 17Which are a shadow of things to come; but the body is of Christ (Col 2:)

Types and shadows, to one degree or another, is acknowledged by just about every church and theologian as a valid way to help understand the New Testament. I say "to one degree or another" because though it is an undeniable reality that portions of the Old Testament are uncanny in their similitude of what is taught in the New Testament, just about every doctrine has drawn a limit-line of acceptance.

Limits, like doctrines or laws, hold people into a given "box." Psychiatry does this as well, and is noted for doing just that. But we don't usually think of churches as doing the same thing.

Boxes make it easy for us to pass judgement without having to burden ourselves with thinking and considerations. We just toss whatever we have in hand in whatever box seems to fit. It's rather like a woman doing her laundry: she puts whites together, colors together, then makes a sub category of delicates and permanent press. It is doubtful she will consider if the article of clothing is a shirt or a pair of pants - they all go together.

Church doctrine is no different. Doctrine, like Articles of Faith, are devised in order to separate the whites from the colors, and to give each of us a label by which we can know one from another without having to give it any thought.

Old Testament Types and Shadows, though obviously a clarification of New Testament principles and teachings, are often mixed up and reassembled to fit the doctrines of each individual church doctrine. And that shouldn't take anyone by surprise since the rest of the Bible is treated in the same manner.

Those Types and Shadows that fit well with, and help support a particular doctrine are considered as valid and good evidence that the agreeable Types and Shadows are correct. But those Types and Shadows that don't support that church's doctrine are counted as non valid, and if they are too close to supporting something contrary to that church's doctrine, they are dismissed as "coincidence."

The assumption I make considering Types and Shadows is that each and every one of them is an explanation for us today. It is my belief that these Types and Shadows are intended as a road map by which we can make sure our doctrine is correct and in line with God's intent. If our doctrine veers from the road map, we are not to redraw the map, as every church and cult does, but we are to get back on track, and therefore under God's wings of blessings and protection.

But instead the churches stand like tepees covering the desert, shooting arrows at one another, while God, the Head of the Church, is ignored, or at best given a tip of the hat as acknowledgment if someone happens to pass by Him.

And we think God is going to reward all these wayward people with Heaven, rather than punish them as He did the Jews in the wilderness.

God said He will not be mocked, and that He will not change. That means if anyone is going to have to change in order to be with God, we are the ones who have to do the changing.

So I say, if anyone, or any church (which will never happen) wants to find God and His purposes for us, that person or church had better orient his map to that of God's, or else find themselves drifting farther and farther afield into the wilderness - as obviously the churches are in the process of doing.

16Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days: 17Which are a shadow of things to come; but the body is of Christ. 18Let no man beguile you of your reward in a voluntary humility and worshipping of angels, intruding into those things which he hath not seen, vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind, 19And not holding the Head, from which all the body by joints and bands having nourishment ministered, and knit together, increaseth with the increase of God. 20Wherefore if ye be dead with Christ from the rudiments of the world, why, as though living in the world, are ye subject to ordinances, 21(Touch not; taste not; handle not; 22Which all are to perish with the using;) after the commandments and doctrines of men? 23Which things have indeed a show of wisdom in will worship, and humility, and neglecting of the body; not in any honour to the satisfying of the flesh. (Col 2:)

1Now of the things which we have spoken this is the sum: We have such an high priest, who is set on the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens; 2A minister of the sanctuary, and of the true tabernacle, which the Lord pitched, and not man. 3For every high priest is ordained to offer gifts and sacrifices: wherefore it is of necessity that this man have somewhat also to offer. 4For if he were on earth, he should not be a priest, seeing that there are priests that offer gifts according to the law: 5Who serve unto the example and shadow of heavenly things, as Moses was admonished of God when he was about to make the tabernacle: for, See, saith he, that thou make all things according to the pattern showed to thee in the mount. (Heb 8:)

1For the law having a shadow of good things to come, and not the very image of the things, can never with those sacrifices which they offered year by year continually make the comers thereunto perfect. 2For then would they not have ceased to be offered? because that the worshippers once purged should have had no more conscience of sins. 3But in those sacrifices there is a remembrance again made of sins every year. 4For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and of goats should take away sins. 5Wherefore when he cometh into the world, he saith, Sacrifice and offering thou wouldest not, but a body hast thou prepared me: 6In burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin thou hast had no pleasure. (Heb 10:)

1Then verily the first covenant had also ordinances of divine service, and a worldly sanctuary. 2For there was a tabernacle made; the first, wherein was the candlestick, and the table, and the showbread; which is called the sanctuary. 3And after the second veil, the tabernacle which is called the Holiest of all; 4Which had the golden censer, and the ark of the covenant overlaid round about with gold, wherein was the golden pot that had manna, and Aaron's rod that budded, and the tables of the covenant; 5And over it the cherubims of glory shadowing the mercyseat; of which we cannot now speak particularly. 6Now when these things were thus ordained, the priests went always into the first tabernacle, accomplishing the service of God. 7But into the second went the high priest alone once every year, not without blood, which he offered for himself, and for the errors of the people: (Heb 9:)

. 19Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord; 20And he shall send Jesus Christ, which before was preached unto you: 21Whom the heaven must receive until the times of restitution of all things, which God hath spoken by the mouth of all his holy prophets since the world began. 22For Moses truly said unto the fathers, A prophet shall the Lord your God raise up unto you of your brethren, like unto me; him shall ye hear in all things whatsoever he shall say unto you. 23And it shall come to pass, that every soul, which will not hear that prophet, shall be destroyed from among the people. 24Yea, and all the prophets from Samuel and those that follow after, as many as have spoken, have likewise foretold of these days. 25Ye are the children of the prophets, and of the covenant which God made with our fathers, saying unto Abraham, And in thy seed shall all the kindreds of the earth be blessed. 26Unto you first God, having raised up his Son Jesus, sent him to bless you, in turning away every one of you from his iniquities. (Acts 3)
