Busybody Reports

Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth,
that shall he also reap.

"Hi-de-ho everybody. This is Michael Jay Busybody in the office of well-known and respected financial advisor Mr Opulent Von Croesus. Thank you Mr Croesus for giving me the opportunity to interview you concerning your recent best selling book Balance of Fiscal Nature."

"You are entirely welcome Mr Busybody. I'm always glad to do what I can in an effort to broaden the financial understanding of this world's failing economy."

"And that of course is the subject of your book, is it not Mr Croesus? The failure of commerce to keep its head above proverbial water so-to-speak?"

"Very well put Mr Busybody. You do have a way with words."

"Words are my bread and butter Mr Croesus, as money is yours. Tell me sir, according to what you say n your book you believe you have the answer to the ever-increasing financial problem this world continues to experience, that is to say the plunging value of the ruble and the yen among other currencies such as our own dollar. Please give me and my listening audience a brief recounting of your view of the matter if you will."

"I will. Mr Busybody, let us say you were the owner of a large supermarket located in an average city of America. Your market remains profitable during a stable economy. The money you bring in equals or exceeds the revenue needed to pay your expenses such as payroll, taxes and the purchase of merchandise. When the economy of your city improves, your financial outlook improves accordingly. Are you following me Mr Busybody?"

"I believe I am Mr Croesus, however we're experiencing a plunging economy, not a stabile or an improving one. My market as you call it is not seeing the revenue necessary to keep it alive and well. How do you suggest I improve my fiscal status?"

"Precisely my point Mr Busybody. The once affluent citizenry of your community is now experiencing a lack of wherewithal to even purchase your supply of staples, the sale of which you depend to keep your stores open, leastwise the luxury items that causes your investment to see a profit."

"You've presented us with the problem Mr Croesus, now what must I do to repair the breach?"

"You raise the prices on all your items Mr Busybody, just as everyone else is doing in order to satisfy their own needs."

"You have a grand way of stating the obvious Mr Croesus, but as I see it all I would be doing is adding to the existing problem. If the people of my community can't afford to purchase what they need at the present price tag, how can they possibly be expected to purchase it at an increased figure? By following your advise I would be cutting my own throat in effort to satisfy my belly."

"Precisely Mr Busybody, and that in a nut shell is exactly what is occurring throughout the world. People in every walk of life are slitting their own throat in effort to satisfy their own belly, that is, their wants over their needs."

"But if people are unable to satisfy their needs according to present situations, what must they do in order to improve their lot in life?"

"We are a generation of self-seeking people Mr Busybody. We believe we are entitled to all the good things of this life. We look for more in the future than what we now possess. We want the new, the best, the brightest for ourselves. Our wants come before our needs. Would you give me a good grade for my assessment of life at this time Mr Busybody?"

"I would indeed Mr Croesus. That's the nature of man, at least man in modern civilization. But I fear you digress sir, the subject at hand is how I can manage to keep my doors open when no one is able to purchase what I have to sell. What is your advise in regards to my present situation?"

"Yes Mr Busybody, let's take a look at your present situation. You have to sell what you have to people who are unable to purchase what you have in stock at your current prices. If you lower your prices you might for a time be able to remain out of the red by an inch or two. Since lowering your prices will keep your doors open, what do you do Mr Busybody?"

"I suppose I lower my prices. That sounds like the reasonable thing to do. I wouldn't make the profit I desire, but at least I remain in business."

"So it would seem Mr Busybody, so it would seem. But you are not the only one involved in the present crisis. You are but the tip of the iceberg so-to-speak. What you face, everyone in the nation, in fact in the world also face. You must multiply yourself by millions in order to have a better accounting of the situation you deal with. So, in order to maintain your status quo you lower your prices. However your employees are in the very same situation as are those in the community, they are unable to make ends meet or to purchase the ever-increasing new technology that comes forth day by day. They, let us say fifty employees, come to you and insist they receive a raise in pay in order to maintain their accustomed standard of living. What do you tell your devoted employees?"

"As a matter of fact Mr Croesus I have myself been in an identical situation early in my maturing life. I worked at a factory where the union was insisting on a raise, just as my factitious employees are about to do. The factory said they would not, and could not give us the raise they asked for. The union insisted, and went out on strike. The management of the factory said if we didn't return to work, they would take their factory and relocate in a foreign country. But the union was relentless."

"And what happened to your factory and your job Mr Busybody?"

"Hundreds of us were out of work, on the welfare system to one degree or another. The factory building, after many decades still remains an empty memorial to a time lost in history."

"Precisely Mr Busybody. And you know that is what would happen to your supermarket if the employees insist on their demands for more money, money that you are unable to supply. In fact, instead of the employees receiving an increase in pay, which they say they absolutely need, you tell them there will be a layoff and many, perhaps half of the employees will be on the welfare system as you call it since there is a diminishing availability of jobs to be had, and the remaining employees will have to fill in for those who are out on the dole. And you tell those still with employment that in the future it might come to having to cut their pay or have the store close altogether."

"That's a drastic step Mr Croesus. Is there any way by which I can sidestep this undesirable situation?"

"I will add a few more details not yet covered or considered and let you decide for yourself Mr Busybody. In the story of your own experience with a failed economy you're factory moved over seas. This of course is an ever-increasing way in which manufactures deal with the extremely high economic demands this country has become noted for. Factories can purchase their parts much cheaper in foreign lands since that's where the parts are manufactured, and labor is abundantly cheaper in foreign countries because the hunger for luxuries is much lower in those areas. Therefore the end product is also much lower and can be purchased for a lower price tag."

"Hold on Mr Croesus. I think I've detected a flaw in your reasoning. If I, a store manager, am able to buy the items I wish to sell at a lower price because they're made in another country that is able to produce them cheaper, shouldn't that increase the likelihood of selling the item?"

"That I suppose is the general consensus Mr Busybody, however the price of manufacture is only a part of the total price. If you lived in the country which manufactured the automobile or whatever you might well be able to purchase it for less. However in this country we have to pay many taxes on the product, plus the great expense of shipping the item to this country, and again the shipping from the point of debarkation to the many points it must pass before it gets to your store. On top of this you have the fact that it's through the sales of manufactured items and through the labor of the work force that taxes are acquired in order to run this fine country of ours. With there being a limited number of jobs in the labor force, and most of them being on the lower end of the economic scale, and there being nothing manufactured in this country to speak of, where is this revenue supposed to come from? Add to this the ever-increasing needs of those on the welfare system, and the payroll of those working for the various levels of government, supplying the needs of our military, our schools, and the like, the needs of government increases as the supply to keep the government running dwindles. Then consider that taxes are being acquired through the manufacture of the items you have to sell. But it's not this country who receives the revenue, but rather it's the country in which our products are made that receives the cream of our investment. It's a win-win situation for those we choose to look down on, that is to say those not of our own nationality, and a lose-lose situation for us, the one's who supposedly are the kings of the world."

"All right Mr Croesus, I concede your loquacious point. But I'm still in possession of a store that's failing. What can I do, or better said, what can each of us do if we as a nation, or in the worst scenario, the world, is not to drown in it's own complacency and lack of substance?"

"Sacrifice Mr Busybody. It's a word not understood or desired in this great nation of ours, but if we are to survive as a civilized nation we must revert to our foundation, which is that of sacrifice. It was through self-sacrifice this nation was founded, that caused it to grow, that caused the pioneers to settle the West, and that caused one neighbor to care for and support his neighbor who was in greater need than he himself. If we, as a nation, continue to only look to our own self-interest and to satisfy our lust for more and better, not only we, but the whole world will find itself over its head in debt and destruction."

"That's a gloomy picture you paint Mr Croesus. However as you say, sacrifice is a possible way of slipping out from under our present down-slide to oblivion. But surely you, the acclaimed expert on financial growth, must have some other advise than that of the improbable considering the nature of modern man. Will you share your expertise with us sir?"

"I would Mr Busybody, but it would still require a great deal of sacrifice on all our part. But according to my Rolex and my awaiting chauffeur and Limousin it's time for me to join the President at his thousand dollar a plate celebration. Good day to you Mr Busybody, and be sure to mind that store of yours."

2Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ. 3For if a man think himself to be something, when he is nothing, he deceiveth himself. 4But let every man prove his own work, and then shall he have rejoicing in himself alone, and not in another. 5For every man shall bear his own burden. 6Let him that is taught in the word communicate unto him that teacheth in all good things. 7Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. 8For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting. 9And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not. 10As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith. (Gal 6:)

13For, brethren, ye have been called unto liberty; only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another. 14For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this; Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. 15But if ye bite and devour one another, take heed that ye be not consumed one of another. 16This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh. 17For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would. (Gal 5:)

17These are wells without water, clouds that are carried with a tempest; to whom the mist of darkness is reserved for ever. 18For when they speak great swelling words of vanity, they allure through the lusts of the flesh, through much wantonness, those that were clean escaped from them who live in error. 19While they promise them liberty, they themselves are the servants of corruption: for of whom a man is overcome, of the same is he brought in bondage. 20For if after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, they are again entangled therein, and overcome, the latter end is worse with them than the beginning. (2Peter 2:)

1From whence come wars and fightings among you? come they not hence, even of your lusts that war in your members? 2Ye lust, and have not: ye kill, and desire to have, and cannot obtain: ye fight and war, yet ye have not, because ye ask not. 3Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts. 4Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God. 5Do ye think that the scripture saith in vain, The spirit that dwelleth in us lusteth to envy? 6But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble. (James 4:)

21Jesus said unto him, If thou wilt be perfect, go and sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come and follow me. 22But when the young man heard that saying, he went away sorrowful: for he had great possessions. 23Then said Jesus unto his disciples, Verily I say unto you, That a rich man shall hardly enter into the kingdom of heaven. 24And again I say unto you, It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God. (Mat 19:)
