what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world?
See that shanty on the corner, near the railroad tracks? The one with a collection of rusted automobiles and lead pipes. Yes, that's the one. There lives Lanslo and Honeysuckle Plebe, the neighborhood handyman. Let's go meet the Plebes, shall we?
In today's episode we find Lanslo and Honeysuckle tuning in their radio. Listen:
"Turn on the news Lanslo. Let's see what's happening in the world."
"Got it Hon."
***click *** "Now for the news, but first an important word from our sponsor." "On sale now, close out on cheap American flags, made in China. Now only four for a dollar. Come get them before we throw them out. Sale ends soon, so buy, buy, buy!" "Now for the news" .... "The ten commandments in our courthouses? Don't be ridiculous. We know God isn't real and that there's no such thing as right or wrong." .... "Prayer in our schools? Don't be ridiculous, we know there is no God, that He's just a myth. Spend the time on more important things like sex education and learning to play video games." ...." Prayer in congress? Don't be ridiculous. We know the founding fathers didn't really believe in God, and that this was never a Christian nation." ... "Prayer in......"
"You c'n turn that thing off now Hon. Nothing new in the news. Same ol' thing, trying t' kick God out of this here country and out of the lives of us regular folks. Oh well, time to turn in. I'll shut off the light and this here radio an' ...."

"It's been a week now Lanslo. Let's see what's happening on the news. Maybe they have more on the attack."
"Got it Hon."
***click *** "On the news front, everything seems to be under control now. We've lifted the fear we experienced a week ago, although we're informed that there is still more cleaning up to do, and the potential for more bodies under the rubble. But for the most part, all is calm. And now a word from our sponsor." ..."On sale now, close out on cheap American flags, made in China. Now only four for a dollar. Come get them before we throw them out. Sale ends soon, so buy, buy, buy!" "Now for the news" .... "The ten commandments in our courthouses? Don't be ridiculous. We know the founding fathers didn't really believe in God, and that this was never a Christian nation." ... "Prayer in......"
"You can turn that thing off now Lanslo. I see where back to the beginning."
"Yep, and I see the flags is down all up an' down the street. Everything's like it was, 'xept the towers. I guess.... You looks deep in thoughts Hon. What you thinkin' so hard on?"
"Well Lanslo, I was just thinking. Here on to a week ago we was praying like mad that God would help us out of our mess. It appears to me He did just that. But what good did it do? I mean, what did we learn from it all? Seems to me we learnt nothing at all. So it came to my mind, I just wonder what God's going to do the next time we're in trouble and cry out to Him?"
"I'm afeared to think on it Hon. But I reckon He'll do like what He done with the other folks that God had watch over, and then they turned their backs on Him. That's what I reckon."
6Therefore pray not thou for this people, neither lift up cry nor prayer for them, neither make intercession to me: for I will not hear thee. 17Seest thou not what they do in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem? 18The children gather wood, and the fathers kindle the fire, and the women knead their dough, to make cakes to the queen of heaven, and to pour out drink offerings unto other gods, that they may provoke me to anger. 19Do they provoke me to anger? saith the LORD: do they not provoke themselves to the confusion of their own faces? 20Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, mine anger and my fury shall be poured out upon this place, upon man, and upon beast, and upon the trees of the field, and upon the fruit of the ground; and it shall burn, and shall not be quenched. (Jer 14:)
1Now the word of the LORD came unto Jonah the son of Amittai, saying, 2Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and cry against it; for their wickedness is come up before me. . . . . 3So Jonah arose, and went unto Nineveh, according to the word of the LORD. Now Nineveh was an exceeding great city of three days' journey. 4And Jonah began to enter into the city a day's journey, and he cried, and said, Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown. ....5So the people of Nineveh believed God, and proclaimed a fast, and put on sackcloth, from the greatest of them even to the least of them. 6For word came unto the king of Nineveh, and he arose from his throne, and he laid his robe from him, and covered him with sackcloth, and sat in ashes. 7And he caused it to be proclaimed and published through Nineveh by the decree of the king and his nobles, saying, Let neither man nor beast, herd nor flock, taste any thing: let them not feed, nor drink water: 8But let man and beast be covered with sackcloth, and cry mightily unto God: yea, let them turn every one from his evil way, and from the violence that is in their hands. 9Who can tell if God will turn and repent, and turn away from his fierce anger, that we perish not? (Jonah 1:-3:)
6Then the LORD said unto me, Proclaim all these words in the cities of Judah, and in the streets of Jerusalem, saying, Hear ye the words of this covenant, and do them. 7For I earnestly protested unto your fathers in the day that I brought them up out of the land of Egypt, even unto this day, rising early and protesting, saying, Obey my voice. 8Yet they obeyed not, nor inclined their ear, but walked every one in the imagination of their evil heart: therefore I will bring upon them all the words of this covenant, which I commanded them to do; but they did them not. 9And the LORD said unto me, A conspiracy is found among the men of Judah, and among the inhabitants of Jerusalem. 10They are turned back to the iniquities of their forefathers, which refused to hear my words; and they went after other gods to serve them: the house of Israel and the house of Judah have broken my covenant which I made with their fathers. 11Therefore thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will bring evil upon them, which they shall not be able to escape; and though they shall cry unto me, I will not hearken unto them. (Jer 11:)
