Penelope Potter Ss.T

but if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments.

"Good morning children."

"Is everyone ready to begin their Sunday School lesson for today?"

"Very good. Then we will begin. Today's lesson is about.... yes Judy? You have something to ask?"

"Yes Miss Potter. What is sin?"

"What is sin? Why do you ask Judy?"

"Because Miss Potter, I hear grownups talking about it all the time and I don't know what it means."

"Well Judy, that's a subject difficult to explain to a child. Is there anyone who knows what sin is?"

"I do Miss Potter. Sin is being bad and not doing what your mother tells you to do."

"Hun huh Bobby. Sin is not eating you spinach. And if you sin you go straight to hell when you die. That's what my momma told me, and my mommy wouldn't lie, huh Miss Potter?"

"I don't like spinach Miss Potter. Am I going to hell? I don't want to go to hell."

"No Jimmy, you won't go to hell for not eating your spinach."

"But that's what my momma said Miss Potter. Did my momma lie to me?"

"No Laurie, I'm sure your mother didn't lie to you. But sometimes parents say something to their child that is either taken wrong or is intended to get the child to do what is best for them. Sometimes trying to determine what is the truth and what is a lie is a difficult thing to do, and not something a child your age should attempt. You just keep your confidence that your mother is telling you the truth, and when you get older you'll better understand what she is doing."

"Miss Potter? I think sin is confusing. I thought I knew what it was before, but now I don't know. I sure didn't know that spinach was sin."

"Yes Teddy, sin is confusing, and that is why there are so many people having different ideas of what sin is. To some people there is no such thing as sin, and others believe sin is going to movies or seeing a doctor. That is why the subject of sin is not discussed very often, at least not seriously. And it is the reason why I really didn't want to discuss it with you children. I know it can only confuse you more."

"But Miss Potter, if doing sin will make us go to hell, and not doing sin will make us go to Heaven, don't we should oughta' know what it is?"

"Yes you should Billy. Yes you should. And I'll try to explain it the best I can."

"Miss Potter? Jesus didn't sin did He? I mean, if Jesus didn't sin, then doesn't that mean He maybe knows what sin is? Maybe if we listened to Him we can learn how not to sin. Maybe? Huh?"

"Very good Teddy. And you're right. Jesus should know what sin is and what we should do to keep from sinning. I wonder why nobody ever thought of that before?"

SIN - G266 hamartia ham-ar-tee'-ah From G264; sin (properly abstract): - offence, sin (-ful).

G264 hamartano¯ ham-ar-tan'-o Perhaps from G1 (as a negative particle) and the base of G3313; properly to miss the mark (and so not share in the prize), that is, (figuratively) to err, especially (morally) to sin: - for your faults, offend, sin, trespass.

14I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus. (Phil 3:)

24Know ye not that they which run in a race run all, but one receiveth the prize? So run, that ye may obtain. (1Cor 9:)

35Cast not away therefore your confidence, which hath great recompense of reward. 36For ye have need of patience, that, after ye have done the will of God, ye might receive the promise. (Heb 10:)

10For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all. (James 2:)

4Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law. (1John 3:)

9Whosoever transgresseth, and abideth not in the doctrine of Christ, hath not God. He that abideth in the doctrine of Christ, he hath both the Father and the Son. (2John 1:)

16And, behold, one came and said unto him, Good Master, what good thing shall I do, that I may have eternal life? 17And he said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God: but if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments. (Mat 19:)

17Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil. 18For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled. 19Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. (Mat 5:)
