Penelope Potter Ss.T

his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.

"Good morning children."

"Is everyone ready to begin their Sunday School lesson for today?"

"Very good. Then we will begin. Today's lesson is about... Yes Patty? Do you have to go to the bathroom?"

"No Miss Potter, not this time. I just wanted to tell you about the strange thing I saw yesterday."

"Strange thing Patty? What strange thing did you see that causes you to interrupt the lesson I'm trying to teach?"

"I'm sorry Miss Potter. I won't tell you if it's going to make you mad at me."

"I'm not mad at you Patty. You go right ahead and tell us what you saw. I know you won't hear a word I say until you do."

"Well, yesterday me and my momma were in a store and there was some people there wearing long bathrobes and a towel on their head. I guess they were swimming or something."

"The people you saw were not strange Patty, they were probably Muslim or Hindu. Not everyone dresses as we do in this country. Dressing different might seem strange to you because you're not used to seeing anything other than common American clothing."

"They might be Muslim Miss Potter. My bed sheets are Muslim and they look kind of like what they were wearing."

"No Patty, I mean they were probably of a different culture, a different religion than are you and I. Not everyone in the world is Christian. There are many different religions in this big world of ours."

"Oh, I know that Miss Potter. I sawed it on TV. Like I saw Indians dancing and things like that. But these people weren't dancing or anything, they just, just..."

"Yes Patty, they just what?"

"Well, they all took a little hanky kind of thing and put it on the floor and kissed the floor. I think that's strange. I don't think it's very healthy to kiss the floor like that. Why did thy kiss the floor Miss Potter? That's what I think was so strange about them, don't you?"

"Children, can anyone tell me what these people were doing when they knelt down on the floor as Patty described?"

"I think I know Miss Potter. I sawed a man do that on TV when he got off a big boat. He had on a soldier's outfit like a Army guy. I think he was just happy to be off the boat. Maybe these people just got off a boat too. If they had towels on their head maybe the boat got a hole in it. That would make them glad to be off the boat I think."

"I doubt that is what Patty saw Billy. Some people belong to a religion that believes in praying at certain times of the day wherever they are. It was probably that time of day and this family all took out their prayer mat and bowed toward their Temple wherever that might be."

"Miss Potter? You mean these people were praying? That's weird! I thought we were supposed to pray in church or when we eat or at bed time. I never heard of praying in a store. Isn't that sacri... sacro something or other?"

"I think you mean sacrilegious Patty. No, for them it would be sacrilegious to not pray several times a day."

"I don't know Miss Potter. I don't think God wants us to pray all the time like that. I think He likes us to pray when it's time to pray, not other times. That's what I do, so I guess it's right, don't you?"

"I know it's not often taught anymore in the churches, but the fact is God wants us to pray all the time, day and night, and to have our mind always on Him. Our life is supposed to be one of prayer and praise. Those things that take us away from prayer are to be looked upon as being sad moments as if we are separated from our Lord. I know this is a hard concept for you to grasp at such a young age, but hopefully when you're older you'll understand what I'm telling you."

"Miss Potter? Do you pray all the time like that?"

"I try to Patty. I'm not as successful in my prayer life as I would like to be. But I try."

16Rejoice evermore. 17Pray without ceasing. 18In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you. 19Quench not the Spirit. (1Thes 5:)

36Master, which is the great commandment in the law? 37Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. 38This is the first and great commandment. (Mat 22:)

6For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ. (1Cor 2:)

1Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. 2But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night. (Psalm 1:)
