Penelope Potter Ss.T

Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness' sake

"Good morning children."

"Is everyone ready to begin their Sunday School lesson for today?"

"Very good. Then we will begin. Today's lesson is about learning to be good boys and girls. Can anyone tell me what is needed to teach you children to be good and not to be bad? Yes Betty, what do you have for us?"

"My momma uses a ping pong paddle to make sure I be a good girl. She calls it the board of education."

"And does the paddle work to make you a good girl Betty?"

"Oh yes Miss Potter. I see the ping pong paddle and I stop thinking about bad things to do. And I don't like to play ping pong either. I wonder why?"

"Yes Buster? You have something for us?"

"Yes Miss Potter. My school teacher makes us sit in a corner with a pointy hat when we're bad. I don't like to sit in the corner, so I be good."

"Miss Potter?"

"Yes Billy?"

"In my class I try to be real good and do everything I'm supposed to. But I still get in trouble. And there's a boy in my class who everyone calls teacher's pet. His name is Alexander. I think he's the teacher's nephew or something like that. He always does bad things, but he never gets in trouble. The teacher said that Alexander wouldn't do anything bad. Is that fair Miss Potter? I don't think it's fair for me to be bad and him be good when he's being bad and I try to be good."

"It's not fair Billy, but at the same time, by you being treated unfairly, you become stronger, and you are the winner."

"Winner Miss Potter? I don't understand. How do I win for being called bad when I'm good?"

"Let's look at the picture you drew for us Billy, and I'll show you how you are the winner."

"Miss Potter? I didn't bring a picture today. Do you want me to draw you one now?"

"I mean the verbal picture you drew for us concerning your situation at school."

"Oh, that picture."

"Your friend Alexander..."

"He's no friend of mine Miss Potter. I have a friend though. Do you want me to draw you a picture of him."

"That's ok Billy. Well, this Alexander, he doesn't get punished for what he does wrong. And does him not being punished help him to be a better person?"

"No Miss Potter. He's the badest kid in my school."

"But you get punished, sometimes for something you didn't do. Does your being punished help you to be a good person Billy?"

"Yes Miss Potter. I try to be as good as I can."

"And if you weren't punished for what you did wrong, would you be as good as you are?"

"Mmmm. I don't think so Miss Potter. Sometimes I think of doing something I shouldn't, and then I remember what will happen, and I think something else. But when I think I might not get caught, sometimes I don't think of something else and I kind of do what I think I shouldn't. I think."

"Exactly Billy. Having punishment, even if sometimes that punishment is not deserved, is better at making us a good person than no punishment at all. Can anyone tell me someone who was punished for something they didn't do, but was given rewards for not running from that punishment? Yes Wanda?"

"Jesus? I think Jesus got punished for something He didn't do. And He gots to be King of the World. Does that count Miss Potter?"

"An excellent example Wanda. And can anyone tell me what the Bible says about punishment and how we are to think about it? Read these verses and tell me what you see."

12Beloved, think it not strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened unto you: 13But rejoice, inasmuch as ye are partakers of Christ's sufferings; that, when his glory shall be revealed, ye may be glad also with exceeding joy. 14If ye be reproached for the name of Christ, happy are ye; for the spirit of glory and of God resteth upon you: on their part he is evil spoken of, but on your part he is glorified. 15But let none of you suffer as a murderer, or as a thief, or as an evildoer, or as a busybody in other men's matters. 16Yet if any man suffer as a Christian, let him not be ashamed; but let him glorify God on this behalf. 17For the time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God: and if it first begin at us, what shall the end be of them that obey not the gospel of God? 18And if the righteous scarcely be saved, where shall the ungodly and the sinner appear? 19Wherefore let them that suffer according to the will of God commit the keeping of their souls to him in well doing, as unto a faithful Creator. (1Peter 4:)

10Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness' sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 11Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake. 12Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you. (Mat 5:)

14Bless them which persecute you: bless, and curse not. (Rom 12:)

18If the world hate you, ye know that it hated me before it hated you. 19If ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you. 20Remember the word that I said unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord. If they have persecuted me, they will also persecute you; if they have kept my saying, they will keep yours also. 21But all these things will they do unto you for my name's sake, because they know not him that sent me. (John 15:)
