Doctrine in dialogue format

why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but perceivest not the beam that is in thine own eye?

"Hi-de-ho everybody. This is Michael Jay Busybody coming at you from the studio of Dr Sagamore Margrave. Dr Margrave, I want to thank you for inviting me and my listening audience into your most elegant and well equipped study. It is indeed impressive. There must be hundreds of books in this room alone. Have you perchance read all of these tomes I see?"

"I'm most delighted to have you visit Mr Busybody. And yes, for the most part I have read just about all these books you see."

"And, Dr Margrave, on what little wall is in view between the massive book cases appears to be lined with diplomas and awards of merit. You must indeed be highly educated."

"I am indeed Mr Busybody. I have a Masters or a Doctorate in just about every field that has any bearing on the field of religion. That is my primary interest, as I'm sure you know."

"I do indeed Dr Margrave. And that is the subject I would like to investigate for the sake of my listeners. You have just recently published a best selling book entitled Cult Dangers. I have read your book and found it quite intriguing. You did indeed cover the subject thoroughly and in depth. There are some matters you covered that I would like to be given some clarification, if you would be so kind."

"Certainly Mr Busybody. What is it you would like for me to clear up for you?"

"Well, in your book, Dr Margrave, you state that one of the greatest dangers is that of mind control. If I understand you correctly, Dr, that means the cults do not allow their participants to consider for themselves what is right or wrong, but rather they dictate a belief system that must be accepted and followed if a person wishes to remain a member of that association. Am I correct in my summation Dr Margrave?"

"You are indeed correct Mr Busybody. Cults lay out a highly defined list of Biblical interpretations that must be blindly accepted and not questioned or deviated from. To question or disobey would mean reprimand or expulsion. It is just such a situation as this that Jesus faced and condemned in no uncertain terms. We have His Word on this."

"I see, Dr Margrave. And I understand, Dr, that you are a pastor of a church yourself. Am I correct?"

"You are indeed correct Mr Busybody. I am the pastor of one of the largest churches in this city, and I am one of the leading theological counsellors for our denomination, which, by the way, is one of the largest denominations in the world."

"That is very impressive Dr Margrave. I see I'm speaking to the right person from which to gain the answers to my questions."

"I would indeed say so Mr Busybody. And just what is your question?"

"Well, Dr Margrave, since you are so staunchly opposed to the behavior of the cults, I would then assume that you conduct your church and teach your congregation quite differently than do the cults. Am I correct in this assumption Dr Margrave?"

"You are indeed Mr Busybody."

"Then, I take it Dr Margrave, that should a Oneness follower wish to attend your Trinitarian church, you would have no objections to this?"

"None whatever Mr Busybody."

"That is most gracious of you Dr Margrave. And if that Oneness advocate wished to teach a Bible study class in your church, you would have no objections to this I assume?"

"Um, that's a little difficult to answer Mr Busybody. If you mean could that person teach Oneness in our church, then the answer would be no."

"How about an Amillennialist?"

"No Mr Busybody. An Amillennialist would not be allowed to teach our class."

"Surely a Pentecostal?"

"No Mr Busybody. Not a Pentecostal either."

"Surely then a Lutheran or a Methodist Dr Margrave?"

"I'm afraid not Mr Busybody."

"Interesting I dare say. Then may I ask you this Dr Margrave, should a member of your church who is a teacher of one of your classes or a deacon, or holds some other position in your church decide to accept a belief that differs from your own, even a doctrine ever so minor, what would be your reaction to such a decision?"

"I'm afraid we would have to ask such a one to either step down from their position, or to leave the church. One must have decorum and uniformity in an organization if it is to survive Mr Busybody. There is no other way. I'm sure you understand my position."

"No Dr Margrave, I'm afraid I don't considering your previous statement. Did I not understand you to say that you believe in keeping an open mind in regard to the Word of the Lord and one should not dictate the thinking of others, and that such is what differentiates you from the cults?"

"I did indeed Mr Busybody. However, there is a great difference between what we are doing, and what they are all doing, even though it must appear to be the same to an outsider without knowledge of that difference."

"And, Dr Margrave, might I ask what that difference is?"

"Certainly Mr Busybody. We are right, and all those others are wrong."

1Therefore thou art inexcusable, O man, whosoever thou art that judgest: for wherein thou judgest another, thou condemnest thyself; for thou that judgest doest the same things. 2But we are sure that the judgment of God is according to truth against them which commit such things. 3And thinkest thou this, O man, that judgest them which do such things, and doest the same, that thou shalt escape the judgment of God? (Rom 2:)

41And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but perceivest not the beam that is in thine own eye? 42Either how canst thou say to thy brother, Brother, let me pull out the mote that is in thine eye, when thou thyself beholdest not the beam that is in thine own eye? Thou hypocrite, cast out first the beam out of thine own eye, and then shalt thou see clearly to pull out the mote that is in thy brother's eye. (Luke 6:)
