Busybody Reports

IN ONE EAR

but now ye say, We see; therefore your sin remaineth

"Hi-de-ho everybody. This is Michael Jay Busybody coming at you from the couch of the eminent psychiatrist Hethorford P. Headstrong. Dr Headstrong, thank you ever so much for allowing me and my listening audience into your sanctuary of eavesdropping. I would like to ask...."

"You are entirely welcome Mr Busybody. I'm always glad to share my wealth of knowledge with the less fortunates of this world."

"Your generosity is..."

"Is outstanding. I know Mr Busybody. When one is as well educated and experienced in the exploring of the human psyche as I am it is important that one also be generous with that which they have learned, wouldn't you say so Mr Busybody?"

"It would seem...."

"Somehow I knew you would agree Mr Busybody, everybody does. Being in agreement with those in the know is an important aspect of the maturing process, wouldn't you agree Mr Busybody?"

"Well, I...."

"You needn't be shy about saying so Mr Busybody. It is very astute of you to notice. Yes Mr Busybody, I am indeed a Doctor of Theology as well as a Doctor of Medicine and of the mind. As you can see, my many degrees rather sets me apart from other of the less learned, wouldn't you say so Mr Busybody?"

"Well, I...."

"You are right again Mr Busybody. I am indeed a pastor of a church. A very large and important church at that. What was it that gave you the first clue?"

"Well I...."

"I thought it might have been my many shelves of Biblical studies and references. It's difficult to conceal such a magnificent collection of books, wouldn't you say so Mr. Busybody?"

"Well, I...."

"You are right again Mr Busybody. I do indeed have a gift for knowing what a person says before they even say it. This skill comes from having learned to read between the lines of what a person means, rather than just what they say. I find this true of my studies of the Bible as well. I must not just read what the Bible says, but what God actually means. And often I find that God is saying something entirely different than what the words are saying, and I must dismiss the words and reinterpret them to say what they mean. It's a tradition that we of the clergy do so. Don't you think that such is the best policy to follow Mr Busybody?"

"Well, I...."

"It's been delightful talking with you, and although I am very interested in what else you have to tell me Mr Busybody, I'm afraid I must dismiss you now because I have another client coming in just a very few minutes. Actually I could easily conduct my interviews over the phone since somehow I know exactly what they're thinking before they speak anyway. Perhaps another day we can talk again and you can finish telling me that delightful story you've begun so eloquently."

"Well, I...."

"Good-by Mr Busybody, and do come again."

40And some of the Pharisees which were with him heard these words, and said unto him, Are we blind also? 41Jesus said unto them, If ye were blind, ye should have no sin: but now ye say, We see; therefore your sin remaineth. (John 9:)

13But the word of the LORD was unto them precept upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little; that they might go, and fall backward, and be broken, and snared, and taken. (Isaiah 28:)
