Busybody Reports

In vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.

"Hi-de-ho everybody. This is Michael Jay Busybody on the streets of Anytown USA talking to Mr Licentious Bohemian, a young man on his way to.... Pardon me Mr Bohemian, what is it you said your about to attend?"

"It's a revival man, like, you know, kinda' like a Woodstock of the Bible belt if you know what I mean. Lots a' people letting themselves go an' listening to the Word of God. I mean, like, there's a big evangelist comin' to town, an' ever'body who's anybody's gonna' be there. You come too, man, it's the thing to do."

"I appreciate your invitation Mr Bohemian, but I'm really not a person who enjoys crowds or loud entertainment. But I would appreciate it if you took a moment and told me and my listening audience about such activities. What is it about these, what you call revivals, that particularly interest you? Is it the preaching you enjoy, the learning about God and Bible?"

"Yeah, that too I guess. But it's the spirit, the emotion of the place if you know what I mean. Like ever'body's on a high. God's all over the place. You c'n feel it in the air and in the cool music. Lots a' atmosphere if you know what I mean. It's like if you didn't know better you'd think you'd gone ta' heaven an' was at a Grateful Dead concert or somethin'. Come on man, you don't want to miss it, it's definitely the thing to do."

"You like the music and the concert atmosphere? I'm afraid I'm having a bit of a problem picturing this event, it not sounding like the church activities which I'm accustom to. Tell me Mr Bohemian, do they preach from the Bible? Do they teach about Jesus and the Holy Spirit and the need for conversion and other such things I associate with Christianity?"

"Sure man, all that stuff. It's got it all. God an' Jesus and all that other stuff is ever'where in the place. An' for the conversion thing, ever'body gets saved. It's the thing to do. Come on man, you come too. Get saved like ever'body else, and tell 'm I sent you so's I can get another gold star behind my name in God's little black book."

"Thank you again Mr Bohemian, but for myself, I've already been baptized and converted."

"No problemo there man. I've come forward nine times myself and been converted. It's the thing to do. Ever'body's doin' it. You too. Come on man, don't be a stick in the mud. Put some victory feathers in your hat an' come forward like me. I come forward at every concert, I mean, at every revival. You too man, it's the thing to do."

This is Michael Jay at you again with a final note as I sign off for today's program. Recently I was handed a report that says it is estimated by those in authority that 80 to 90 percent of those baptized and part of the Christian society are not actually saved. It appears to me the title 'Christian' has been downgraded from the strict self-examination and call to obedience and high sense of morality it once was, to become just another fad, a 'thing to do' as expressed by the young man in today's interview. Is this the direction the churches are taking? Is the downplaying of morality and true conversion now a part of the Christian religion? And if it is, what will be it's final destination?

Just another, something to think about.

6And thou shalt say to the rebellious, even to the house of Israel, Thus saith the Lord GOD; O ye house of Israel, let it suffice you of all your abominations, 7In that ye have brought into my sanctuary strangers, uncircumcised in heart, and uncircumcised in flesh, to be in my sanctuary, to pollute it, even my house, when ye offer my bread, the fat and the blood, and they have broken my covenant because of all your abominations. (Ezek 44:)

30Also, thou son of man, the children of thy people still are talking against thee by the walls and in the doors of the houses, and speak one to another, every one to his brother, saying, Come, I pray you, and hear what is the word that cometh forth from the LORD. 31And they come unto thee as the people cometh, and they sit before thee as my people, and they hear thy words, but they will not do them: for with their mouth they show much love, but their heart goeth after their covetousness. (Ezek 33:)

7Ye hypocrites, well did Esaias prophesy of you, saying, 8This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me. 9But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men. (Mat 15:)
