Doctrine in dialogue format
they be blind leaders of the blind. And if the blind lead the blind, both shall fall into the ditch.
"You're entirely welcome Mr Busybody. I'm always happy to deliver my message of the importance of sound doctrine, something so lacking in the churches today."
"Yes Mr Narcissist, I've observed the lack of sound doctrine during my investigations of the churches. What may I ask do you attribute this condition to? Have you formed a conclusion on the matter?"
"I have indeed Mr Busybody. One of the biggest culprits in my opinion is an unrealistic and erroneous understanding of the Bible. If those who teach and preach the Word were to stand back and take an honest look at what they are preaching, they would undoubtedly be able to see the error of their thinking. It's a lack of knowing the Word Mr Busybody, plain and simple. The churches are teaching a corrupted version of the Word"
"I would have to agree with you Mr Narcissist. I've found there to be a vast gulf between what I see in the Bible and what I hear preached. I'm glad to see there's someone who is aware of this problem and working to correct it. The churches do indeed owe you a debt of gratitude."
"Thank you Mr Busybody, but I'm afraid that such gratitude is not to be forthcoming. People don't like to have their failures exposed. It takes a strong person, and a confident one besides, to admit his mistakes and work to correct them."
"Again I agree with you Mr Narcissist. On that note I would like to ask you a few questions about your book and your stance on certain subjects. In your book you expressed a concern regarding the egocentric condition of the churches. You state that they view themselves in an elitist manner. Would you elaborate on this statement if you will please?"
"Yes Mr Busybody. You see, it's become part and parcel of the churches to point the finger at other churches and condemn them for their held beliefs. This is a no-no, and must not continue if the church as a whole is to survive and prosper."
"I see. But Mr Narcissist, with there being so many different beliefs in the church world, and that number growing by leaps and bounds, how is one supposed to know which doctrine to accept? You've researched this problem extensively, what have you decided is the doctrine that fits what you read in the Bible?"
"Why, the doctrine of my own church, of course Mr Busybody. All other churches are sitting on the edge of damnation if you don't mind my speaking my mind bluntly."
"That's an interesting, if not a common position to take Mr Narcissist, and I must say, a bit contrary to what I expected of you. It has been my understanding that you were in favor of total acceptance of denominations other than your own."
"Oh, I am Mr Busybody, I am. But facts are facts, and we have to go by the facts as they're stated in the Word. Keep that in mind Mr Busybody. Remember, that's the entire premise of my book, keeping to the True Word."
"Yes, so I see Mr Narcissist. What you said brings to mind something that came up in the church I attended a couple weeks ago. I...."
"And what church did you attend Mr Busybody?"
"It was a Jehovah's Witnesses church Mr......"
"You don't want to go there Mr Busybody. That church is the devil's playground. Beware of the JW's at all costs. Haven't you been informed of this fact Mr Busybody? I thought everyone knew the dangers of the cults."
"I've heard of such an attitude Mr Narcissist, but again, I didn't expect it to be one held by you considering what you've said in your book. Have you ever attended a Jehovah's Witness service, or read up on what they believe?"
"No Mr Busybody, I haven't. I don't need to read up on the devil to know I'm to avoid him. I already know all I need to know. I don't have to learn the details of their failures. There's one fact to keep in mind Mr Busybody, when you know the conclusion of a matter, facts are of no importance."
"Oh, I see. Well Mr Narcissist, I see here in my notes where you speak in your book of the error of trying to work for one's salvation. I'm a bit confused by this statement, even though it a commonly held doctrine, that of not working for a salvation that has been freely given. Where I find myself confused is in the proof passages you provide. You quote James as saying works is proven by faith, and you give Abraham and his sacrifice of Isaac as evidence of your statement. Is what you state in your book your true stance Mr Narcissist?"
"It most certainly is Mr Busybody. I stand behind everything I say. It's in the Book, therefore it's true. As I've said before, the adherence to the Book is the foundation of truth, which the churches have veered from and to which they must return."
"Yes, I see. But Narcissist, you've reversed the words James uses in his epistle. You state that works are proven by faith, whereas James is saying faith is proven by works, and without works, faith is dead. You've used as your proof text a Scripture that counters the point you're trying to make. Hasn't anyone pointed this out to you? After all, your book has sold millions of copies, surely someone must have noticed this error and brought it to your attention."
"No Mr Busybody, you're the only one who is so blind as to not see the truth in what I've said, even if how I said it is a little jumbled. Truth is not something that has to be proven by evidence. If all evidence seems to indicate that what is known as truth is in error, then the evidence must be discarded so truth can remain. There are times that facts confuse truth, and when truth is disrupted, facts have to be thrown out the window. Can you see this Mr Busybody? Or is this over your head?"
"I'm afraid it's very much over my head Mr Narcissist. Tell me sir, as I understand it you're a preacher of the Word, is this correct?"
"Indeed it is Mr Busybody. I am the pastor of one of the largest churches in town. Why do you ask?"
"I'm just trying to understand your reasoning Mr Narcissist. When I read your book I see where you say the problem with the churches is in their failure to adhere to the letter of the Word, that is, they deviate from what has been clearly written...."
"And I stand by that conviction Mr Busybody, every word of it."
18Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: show me thy faith without thy works, and I will show thee my faith by my works. 19Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble. 20But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead? 21Was not Abraham our father justified by works, when he had offered Isaac his son upon the altar? 22Seest thou how faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made perfect? (James 2:)
18For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book: 19And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book. (Rev 22:)
