Doctrine in dialogue format
be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves
Hello all you folks out there in radio land. This is your announcer Herald Promulgate bringing you another adventure of Life with the Philistines, that normal family everybody loves to imitate. Let's look in on the Philistines and see what they're up to today, shall we?
In today's episode we find Mrs Philistine answering the door bell. Listen:
"Thank you Mam, but no tea for us, thank you. But I would like to come in and show you some material from our church if you don't mind."
"Mind? Not at all. Please, we will be more comfortable in the living room. You can rest your cases on the coffee table if you care to."
"Thank you Mam. First, may I introduce myself. I'm Gregory, and this is Curt. We're from the church...."
"Well, hello Gregory, Curt. You can just call me Martha. Martha Philistine. Please, sit down and relax. Are you sure you wouldn't care for something to drink? How about a cookie? They're right there at your elbow if you would care for one."
"We're fine Mrs Philistine, really. What we would like to do is show you some reading material and introduce you to the Lord Jesus. Are you a church attender Mrs Philistine?"
"Oh my yes Gregory. My family and I have been regular church attendees for most of our life."
"That's good Mrs Philistine. I'm glad to hear it. Then I'm sure you know about Jesus then?"
"Yes I do Gregory. Jesus and I go way back."
"That's good. Then I assume you are running the race and fighting the battle all Christian soldiers are to fight?"
"Race? Battle? You mean like in a war? I don't know what you're talking about Gregory. I go to church and I pay my tithes, at least most of the time. What is this about a race and a war?"
"As Christians Mrs Philistine, we have essentially promised God that we will abandon our desires and our life and have taken on the life and the Spirit of God. We are to strive with all our being to serve God and our fellow man. We are to be as Jesus and the Apostles were, who are our examples of what a Christian truly is. We...."
"Just a moment young man. Let me straighten you out before you go any further. I think you've got the wrong idea. I said I am a good and strong Christian. I do all the church expects of me, well, a lot of it anyway. That's all I'm required to do. I'm baptized and I said the sinner's prayer. You boys are talking about someone who is a preacher or a missionary. I'm not one of those. So if we're going to talk, let's talk on the same level, shall we?"
"Mrs Philistine, I don't think you understand. There's no bleachers in the war of the Spirit. There's not a playing field where runners strive for the mark, and spectators watch. We, as born again Christians are all runners. We are all soldiers. We are all missionaries carrying the flame of the Word. You see Mrs Philistine...."
"Yes, I believe I do see now. You boys are not just unusually well dressed and prim church members out to share the Bible, you're cult members. I've been warned about people like you. And I'm not supposed to be talking to you, or even say anything good to you. I'm sorry to be rude, but I'm going to have to tell you to leave."
"But Mrs Philistine, you don't understand. We...."
"No, no more. You'll have to leave. I'm sorry, but I can't allow the devil in this house. Good day."
Hello again. This is your announcer Herald Promulgate with a final thought. In todays story we have an every day occurrence that we associate with cult members trying to spread heresy and persuade members of traditional churches to join their own. But should this be? Shouldn't we expect that well dressed men and women carrying a Bible and hand-out literature be from our church? Shouldn't we, as strong and devoted Christians be doing all we can to promote drive and dedication in other brothers and sisters in the Lord? Are we failing in our duty to be loving and caring soldiers of the Cross when we merely try to convince unbelievers to enter the church doors, and not encourage them to follow the Lord, bearing their cross?
These are things we might think about. So until next week at this time, good night everybody.
21Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls. 22But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. 23For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass: 24For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was. 25But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed. 26If any man among you seem to be religious, and bridleth not his tongue, but deceiveth his own heart, this man's religion is vain. 27Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world. (James 1:)
