From the Pastor's Pulpit

NARROW WAY: BAPTISM


From that time Jesus began to preach, and to say, Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.



"Good evening ladies and gentlemen. My name is Candor Dispassion and I will be your moderator for this session of the Pastor's Pulpit. Today we have as guests two very well known pastors who represent two views of the process of baptism. Pastor Trinomial, it is a pleasure to have you with us tonight."

"I'm happy to be here, and thank you for the invitation Mr Dispassion."

"And to you Pastor Singleton, thank you for joining us tonight."

"My pleasure Mr Dispassion."

"My question for tonight has to do with baptism. As you know I'm conducting a series of broadcasts entitled the Narrow Way. My purpose in this series is to learn just what Jesus meant by stating that the gate is narrow and that few will find it. It seems to me throughout the past two millennia there have been many people holding the title Christian in one form or another. If the name Christian is what constitutes the narrow way, then the gate must be very broad indeed. My questions to you gentlemen is, what, in your opinion, constitutes salvation as it relates to baptism. Pastor Trinomial I will begin with you since you hold what seems to be the most popular view."

"Yes Mr Dispassion, not only the most popular view, but the oldest and the only correct view as well. Baptism is essential for salvation. The Bible makes it abundantly clear that without baptism a person is lost."

"And how do you feel about this Pastor Singleton?"

"I agree with Pastor Trinomial up to the point where he claims that his view is the only correct one. I would also add to what has been said that children below the age of accountability are excepted."

"Baptism is the key. Then I take it gentlemen that you fully accept that the Mormons and the Jehovah's Witnesses are saved also, am I correct on this?"

"No Mr Dispassion. Not the Mormons or the Witnesses."

"I must agree with Brother Singleton on this matter."

"But gentlemen, you say that baptism is the key. Both the Mormons and the Witnesses are very strong on baptism."

"It does Mr Dispassion. But the baptism must be conducted properly. The baptism must include the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost, and be accompanied by faith."

"Then, as I understand what you're saying is, Pastor Singleton here is not one of the saved?"

"That's not what I said Mr Dispassion. You're putting words in my mouth."

"I must have misunderstood you then Pastor Trinomial. I thought you said that the Trinity must be invoked for a baptism to be effective. This being the case, then you do believe the Mormons are saved because they also baptize in the name of the Trinity, given that the baptized is also a believer."

"Baptism must be performed in the name of Jesus to be valid Mr Dispassion."

"You mean like the Jehovah's Witnesses Mr Singleton?"

"I'm afraid you're having a difficult time understanding this concept due to your lack of education into this matter Pastor Dispassion. It's a foundational truth spelled out clearly in the Bible and very difficult to miss."

"That is indeed interesting Gentlemen. And what I find the most interesting is that something so clearly spelled out, as you say it is, can be interpreted in such a way that you two gentleman see it completely the opposite of one another. Yet both of you insist that the practice, and the procedure is imperative for salvation. It would seem to me, gentlemen, that if this was such an important step to one's eternal destination that it would have been spelled out much clearer in the Word."


45Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures, 46And said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day: 47And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.
