Penelope Potter Ss.T
ye have been called unto liberty; only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh
"GOOD MORNING MISS POTTER!"
"Is everyone ready to begin their Sunday School lesson for today?"
"YES, MISS POTTER!"
"Very good. Then we will begin. Today's lesson is about handles. Who can tell me what a handle is?"
"Miss Potter, you mean like a handle on a bucket?"
"Yes Peter, that is one example of a handle. Can anyone give me another?"
"I think I know Miss Potter. Like on a cooking pan, they have a handle too, and they get hot sometimes."
"That is a good example of a handle Mary. Now, did you know that you have a handle just like the frying pan has? Yes William?"
"You mean like in school when we sing 'I'm a little tea pot'? We do like this with our arm and make a handle out of it, see? Like this...."
"Well, that's not quite what I meant William. The handle I'm referring to is one the devil likes to take hold of and guide you away from what is right. Can anyone give me an example of a handle the devil might take hold of? Yes Michael?"
"I like to go to the movies Miss Potter, but some movies I don't think are good for kids to watch. But I like to watch them anyway, or at least I peek at them, then I feel bad because I don't think I did right. Did I do wrong Miss Potter?"
"That's a good example of a handle the devil likes to take hold of Michael. Anyone else?"
"Sometimes I get mad at people and I think things about them that's not nice. Then sometimes I want to get them in trouble. But I don't do what I think of doing, honest Miss Potter, I only think of those things."
"You're all doing very well today. We have several examples of handles and what problems they can cause. We have the titillating feelings that can come from movies and other forms of entertainment, and we have anger, we have the feelings of getting revenge, and we have our thoughts that can be influenced by our feelings. Does anyone have another handle that the devil can get hold of to control us?"
"I have a friend who likes to tease people. He's not mean or anything, he just likes to tease people, especially girls. I don't like when he does that, but he does it anyway. Is that a handle Miss Potter?"
"Yes it is Wally. Disrespect of others is a handle the devil can use. In fact, anything that is not kindness to others, or that is not good according to the Bible is a handle that the devil can use. And like the handle of the frying pan on the stove, the longer the pan is on the burner, the hotter it will become, and the harder it will be to remove from the flame. God wants us to be rid of every sin, every temptation, and anything that feeds our fleshly desires, that is, our lusts, because they direct us away from Him and give the devil something with which to turn us toward ourselves and away from God."
"Miss Potter, when Jesus was being tempted by the devil, the devil couldn't get Jesus to do anything wrong. Is that because Jesus didn't have any handles?"
33These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world. (John 16:)
21To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my Father in his throne. 22He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches. (Rev 3:)
14The sower soweth the word. 15And these are they by the way side, where the word is sown; but when they have heard, Satan cometh immediately, and taketh away the word that was sown in their hearts. 16And these are they likewise which are sown on stony ground; who, when they have heard the word, immediately receive it with gladness; 17And have no root in themselves, and so endure but for a time: afterward, when affliction or persecution ariseth for the word's sake, immediately they are offended. 18And these are they which are sown among thorns; such as hear the word, 19And the cares of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, and the lusts of other things entering in, choke the word, and it becometh unfruitful. 20And these are they which are sown on good ground; such as hear the word, and receive it, and bring forth fruit, some thirtyfold, some sixty, and some an hundred. (Mark 4:)
