Penelope Potter Ss.T

part 2

Resist the devil, and he will flee from you

"Good morning children."

"Is everyone ready to begin their Sunday School lesson for today?"

"Very good. Then we will begin. Today's lesson is about self control. Last week we looked at handles that the devil can get hold of us with and take away our control. Did any of you children think about handles this week?"

"I did Miss Potter. I watched my kitty play with the strings that hang at the bottom of our curtains. He played with it and made it longer, and the longer it got, the more he played with it. Is that like a handle Miss Potter?"

"Yes Theodore, that's a very good picture of a handle. When we leave a string, a handle for the devil, he will pull on it and make it just as long as he can get it. And the longer it is, the less control we have over ourself. Can anyone tell me of a handle they have that the devil can get hold to?"

"Well Miss Potter, I don't know if this is a handle or not, but I like chocolate candy. It's like I just got to have candy if it's around anywhere. Is that like a handle? If I just got to have it?"

"Yes it is Billy. Anything you just have to have is a handle the devil can use. We call these handles habits when we feel we just have to have whatever it is that tempts us. With grownups it's liable to be something like alcohol or cigarettes. But grownups have some of the very same handles children have as well. Can anyone name something that doesn't seem so bad, but is a handle if it just has to be had?"

"You mean like soda pop Miss Potter? I really like soda pop, 'specially strawberry."

"I like TV Miss Potter. I could spend all day watching TV if my momma didn't make me turn it off."

"Does that mean I can't watch my favorite cartoons Miss Potter? Am I being bad when I watch Sesame Street?"

"No Becky, you're not being bad. But if you feel you have to watch Sesame Street, then it's a handle the devil can use to pull you somewhere else that you shouldn't go. It's like trying to eat just one peanut. Once you have the one peanut, you want another one, until the whole package is gone. Can anyone tell me how to avoid eating the whole bag of peanuts? Yes William?"

"Maybe like Julie said last week, just run outside away from the peanuts and forget about them."

"Very good William. We should stay just as far away from something that's trying to draw us to it. And the more pull it has on us, the more important it is to break away from that pull. Even things that are good for us can be a devil's tool if we let it be a habit. Yes Billy?"

"I really like baseball. I go to every game if I can. If I can't go sometimes I feel bad and get kind of mad like. Is that a handle the devil can get hold of me with Miss Potter?"

"Yes it is Billy. And what do you think you should do about that handle?"

"I don't know Miss Potter. But I guess I got to kind of do like what Julie did and miss some games on purpose so they won't be so important to me. But I really, really like baseball Miss Potter."

12All things are lawful unto me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any. 13Meats for the belly, and the belly for meats: but God shall destroy both it and them. (1Cor 12:)

7Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. 8Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. (James 4:)

22Flee also youthful lusts: but follow righteousness, faith, charity, peace, with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart. 23But foolish and unlearned questions avoid, knowing that they do gender strifes. (2Tim 2:)
