Penelope Potter Ss.T

Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.

"Good morning children."

"Is everyone ready to begin their Sunday School lesson for today?"

"Very good. Then we will begin. Today's lesson is about seeing. First I would like a volunteer. Yes Suzie, you have your hand up. Will you come stand by me in front of the class? Now Children, I want you to look closely at Suzie and tell me what you see."

"Miss Potter, I see something."

"Yes Mary Lou, what is it you see?"

"I see Suzie's dress. It has pretty yellow flowers all over it. I like red flowers. Do you have a dress with red flowers on it Suzie?"

"Billy, you have your hand raised. What do you see?"

"I see a dirty spot by her belt that looks like a dog's foot print. Do you have a dog Suzie?"

"Oh, Miss Potter! Can I go wash it off now?"

"That's ok Suzie. You can wait until after church. It's hardly noticeable anyway. Yes Jimmy? What do you see?"

"I see Suzie. She's the prettiest girl in the world. That's what I see. Can Suzie stay up there with you all the time? She sits behind me and...."

"You have the right idea Jimmy. Where the rest of you were looking for things about Suzie, Jimmy was seeing Suzie, the person. But you Suzie, and all of us are much more than just what we appear to be. For instance, Suzie, is there anything you know about yourself that you don't want anyone to know?"

"Oh Miss Potter! You're not going to make me tell you that are you? I don't want to be up here if I've got to tell you....!"

"No Suzie, you don't have to tell us anything about yourself. I'm just pointing out that everyone, me included, have things about us that we don't want anyone to know about. But it's those hidden things, those things we're ashamed of, that we should be admitting to ourselves and trying to change."

"I saw something today about me and I changed it Miss Potter."

"That's good Billy. Is it something you can share with the class? Or is it something you would like to keep hidden still?"

"I don't want nobody to see it Miss Potter. It's my underpants I spilled my hot cocoa on."

"Well Billy, that's not quite what I meant when I said we have to change things about ourselves. I mean there's things about our heart, like our thoughts and our feelings and our behavior that we have to change. You're parents probably knows about these already, and they are trying to help you change them."

"My momma helps me Miss Potter. But then I can't sit down for a long time."

"Oh, that kind of help. My momma doesn't help me, but she tells my daddy, and boy he sure does!"

"What you children are describing is called chastisement, or discipline in the Bible. And we being a part of God's family will sometimes have to endure discipline from Him as well."

"You mean Miss Potter, when we grow up we still have to be spanked by God?"

"Not spanked like you get from your parents, but He will cause you to feel very uncomfortable when you do something you know you're not supposed to do. I'm sure you already know what I mean. When you do something your parents told you not to do, you're afraid that someday they'll find out and you will get punished. What does that feeling cause you to do? Yes Peter?"

"I run and hide in the closet. But my mother always finds me, and I don't know how, but she knows I did something bad when she finds me. Maybe I should hide better."

"Miss Potter, when I do something bad I hurry up and tell my momma because I know she'll find out anyway, and I don't like the feeling I get waiting for her to find out and punish me."

"Miss Potter? How do grown up parents know when we kids do something bad? Do they have radar like the policemen do? It's spooky how they do that."

"You're aware that your parents already know when you do something bad. And that awareness of them knowing causes you to feel bad. Can anyone tell me what that bad feeling is called? Yes Theodore?"

"My mother says it's a guilty conscience or something like that. What is a conscience Miss Potter?"

"Your conscience is the part of you that keeps you in touch with the good part of you, the part you want to make bigger and better so you can let the whole world know just who you are without having to hide any part of you. When you're able to just tell everyone exactly who you are, then you will have what is called integrity."

"What is that inegridy thing Miss Potter? Is it like a door you go in?"

"Yes Billy, you could call it a door. It's a door to the real you. And that's what God wants from you, for you to discover the real you. So He, like your parents do, will make you feel more and more uncomfortable with the old you until you want nothing more than for the real you, the new you that God has for you to become, to be fully developed and exposed."

"I don't know what you said Miss Potter. Is there a kid's way to tell us what you mean? I thought you said we're supposed to be good, and if we're bad, then God will make us feel bad until we do good things again."

"That's all there is to it Wally. If you understood that, then you got it all. As you grow, being a Christian, you will learn to be more honest with yourself as to who you really are. Then you will become a whole person, an integrated person. Until you become that person you really are, you will be what Jesus called a hypocrite."

"I know what that word means Miss Potter. It's like a magician who makes you see things that aren't really there."

"That's a hypnotist Billy, but a hypocrite is very much the same as an illusionist. A hypocrite tries to show the world that they are a person they really aren't. And God does not like hypocrites. He likes people who are trying to be just like His Son Jesus. He wants real and honest people. Do you understand what I've been telling you today children? Or has it gone over your head?"

"I understood one thing you showed us today Miss potter."

"And what is that Jimmy?"

"I know that Suzie is the prettiest girl in the world."

[See Seeing Jesus for part 2]

7Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new. (2Cor 5:)

22That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts; 23And be renewed in the spirit of your mind; 24And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness. (Eph 4:)

18I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou mayest see. 19As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent. (Rev 3:)

15But that on the good ground are they, which in an honest and good heart, having heard the word, keep it, and bring forth fruit with patience. (Luke 8:)

7He that overcometh shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son. 8But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable,. . . ., and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death. (Rev 21:)

4For the congregation of hypocrites shall be desolate, and fire shall consume the tabernacles of bribery. 35They conceive mischief, and bring forth vanity, and their belly prepareth deceit. (Job 15:)

50The lord of that servant shall come in a day when he looketh not for him, and in an hour that he is not aware of, 51And shall cut him asunder, and appoint him his portion with the hypocrites: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. (Mat 24:)
