OFF TO CHURCH WE GO
In vain do they worship me.
"GOOD MORNING MISS POTTER!"
"Is everyone ready to begin their Sunday School lesson for today?"
"YES, MISS POTTER!"
"Very good. Then we will begin. Today I would like to ask you a question. I've noticed that a number of you children come to Sunday School alone, that is, your parents don't attend church with you, that you ride the Sunday School bus. What I would like ask you is if you know the reason your parents don't come to church, and why you choose to come when your parents don't. The reason I wonder about this is it seems to me if a parent feels church is beneficial for a person, then it would be beneficial for them as well. Would anyone like to volunteer a reply? Yes George?"
"Miss Potter, what does that mean?"
"What does what mean George?"
"What you said. You said something about volunteering. What do you want us to do?"
"I mean does anyone want to tell us what they think the reason might be their parents don't come to church with them. Yes Cindy?"
"Miss Potter, I think it's because they like to sleep late on Sunday. They always do. That's what I think."
"Yes, I suppose that is possible Cindy. But I'm wondering why you don't sleep late as well. That is, why do you come to church? Does your parents make you come?"
"No Miss Potter. I like to come to Sunday School. It's fun. And besides, this is where my friends are."
"I see. Thank you Cindy. Does anyone else wish to share their reason for coming to church on your day off from school? Yes Randolph?"
"I like coming to Sunday School too Miss Potter, but I like the breakfast they give us the most. My mother doesn't like to fix breakfast on Sunday, so sometimes I don't get to eat til late. That's why I like to come."
"Thank you Randolph. Is there anyone else?"
"I know why my mother sends me to church. She sends me to other places too like art school and stuff like that. She says it's to get me out of her hair. I don't get in her hair Miss Potter, honest I don't."
"Church to her then is like a baby sitting service, is that right Beatrice?"
"I think so Miss Potter. But I don't care. I like to draw, and I like it here too. It's fun."
"Is there anyone else who feels church is a convenient baby sitting place as far as your parents are concerned? I see there are. Thank you. You may put your hand down now Martha. I've counted you."
"No Miss Potter, it's not that. I have something to tell you."
"Oh, I see. And what is that Martha?"
"My parents send me to church because they want me to learn good things and not bad. They don't want me to be like the other kids, you know, like the bad kids who smoke and stuff like that. That's why my mother sends me here."
"Very good Martha. Thank you. Yes Jackie? Do you have something for us?"
"No Miss Potter. But I'll bring something next Sunday if you want me to."
"I mean do you have something you would like to tell us?"
"Oh, that. Miss Potter? I come to church because I like to learn about the Bible and stuff like that. I like the stories you tell us about David and the big giant and about the baby Jesus. Sometimes I go to the library when they have a story time. I like those stories too. I like to hear stories. My mommy used to tell me stories when I was little. But now that I'm big, she doesn't read to me any more."
"I think I know why my parents want me to come to church, it's so I can learn to be a good Christian. That's what I think."
"I'm glad to hear you say that Timothy. And do you know why they want you to be a good Christian?"
"No Miss Potter. But if you want me to I'll go ask them. They're in the grownup Sunday School room next door."
6He answered and said unto them, Well hath Esaias prophesied of you hypocrites, as it is written, This people honoureth me with their lips, but their heart is far from me. 7Howbeit in vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men. 8For laying aside the commandment of God, ye hold the tradition of men, as the washing of pots and cups: and many other such like things ye do. 9And he said unto them, Full well ye reject the commandment of God, that ye may keep your own tradition. (Mark 7:)
