The Parsonage

HELPING HANDS

16Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy,
and find grace to help in time of need. (Heb 3:)

Have you ever wondered what the life of a minister is like? Well, wonder no longer, because it's time for The Parsonage, where you will experience a day in the life of Reverend Leopold and his wife Ermintrude Bach, patriarch of the perish.

In today's episode we find Pastor Leo concluding his sermon with a request. Listen:

"You may all go home now and imbibe in that well-deserved dinner that awaits you. But before you leave I would like to make a request of you if I may. Anyone who is able and can find the time, your help this Saturday would be greatly appreciated. There are many things that need attending to here at the church, so if you can come, please bring a pair of work gloves, a shovel, or a hammer, if you have one. You ladies, there's lots for you to do as well. Thank you, and have a nice week."

"Nice sermon you gave today Pastor Leo. Enjoyed every word."

"Why thank you brother Philistine. And just what part of my sermon did you get the most out of?"

"Well, um, you know how it is Pastor, I can't recall off hand. But there were things, you can be sure of that."

"Yes, well I'm glad you found some things about my sermon. So, will you be giving us a hand this Saturday brother Philistine? We could certainly use your help and your expertise."

"I'd love to help Pastor, but you know how it is, running a family and days off and that sort of think. If I was a single man, you know I'd be here hammer swinging. But as it is...."

"Yes, I understand brother Philistine. Well, perhaps next time."

"Right Pastor Leo, next time for sure, maybe."

"I need to talk to you some day about your preaching Pastor Leo. I believe you're straying from the doctrine we follow here at this church. But I'll get you straightened up, you can be sure of that."

"I'm sure you will sister Beadle. In the meantime, will you be with us this Saturday? We could surely use your help, both you and brother Beadle."

"You know better than to ask us of Highborn Manor to do manual labor Pastor Leo. Such a thing is beneath our dignity. Now if you ever need help counseling anyone, you can count on me to be right there with words of advice. But Beadle hands do not fit a broom or a hammer. Please keep that in mind."

"I'll be sure to do just that sister Beadle. Ah, I see the Plebes and the Dreggs approaching. Perhaps they will be willing to lend a hand."

"Those lazy and uncouth louts? Don't be ridiculous Leo. Besides, who would want to be around those smelly ragamuffins anyway. I don't know why there isn't a law against such as they attending church with us decent folks. At least there ought to be a place for them separate from us true Christians so we don't have to associate with them. Life is just unfair at times it seems."

"I suppose it does seem that way at times sister Beadle. Then we'll be seeing you next Sunday?"

"As always Pastor Leo. As always."

"Nice sermon Rev. like usual, hit me in the tender spot."

"I'm glad to hear it Mr Plebes. And I don't suppose you'll be joining us this Saturday since you have company and with that broken foot. We'll sure miss out on you expert skills."

"Who says I won't be there Rev? Me an' the missus here is lookin' forward to helping out. This foot didn't keep me from comin' here today, ain't going to keep me from working neither. Might slow me down a tad. As for relates visiting, they'll be here too if I got nothin' to say about it, else no supper for them Saturday night."

"He's just joshin' ya Preach. Iggy, my man here, an' the young'uns Brickbat and Obloquy 'll be there. The toddler Nauseam's a tad young t' be but a hindrance."

"Odium, my woman here's right Preach. We'll be here. We'll leave ol' Smutch, our hound dog home though if'n you don't mind. Dang thing's got worms, messy sort ya' know. But you c'n count on us. We don't get this way tollerable often, and we likes to leave our mark when we do, if'n you knows what I mean."

"I believe I do brother Dreggs. We're always happy to have you when you're passing through our way. Then it's Saturday for sure. I'll see you then."

"There's just no accounting for the way the Lord works, is there Dear?"

"I should say there isn't Irma, I should say there isn't."

30Give to every man that asketh of thee; and of him that taketh away thy goods ask them not again. 31And as ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise. (Luke 6:)

1My brethren, have not the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory, with respect of persons. 2For if there come unto your assembly a man with a gold ring, in goodly apparel, and there come in also a poor man in vile raiment; 3And ye have respect to him that weareth the gay clothing, and say unto him, Sit thou here in a good place; and say to the poor, Stand thou there, or sit here under my footstool: 4Are ye not then partial in yourselves, and are become judges of evil thoughts? 5Hearken, my beloved brethren, Hath not God chosen the poor of this world rich in faith, and heirs of the kingdom which he hath promised to them that love him? 6But ye have despised the poor. Do not rich men oppress you, and draw you before the judgment seats? 7Do not they blaspheme that worthy name by the which ye are called? (James 2:)
